Since when is a million abbreviated “M”? Isn’t M = 1000 and a million abbreviated MM? (uppercase “MM”; not lower case “mm” as in millimeter)

In Metric system, M stands for Mega.

KM is kilometer, for 1000 meters
MM would be Megameters
