WASHINGTON Vitriol and invective stain American political history, but falsehoods, half-truths and innuendo now spread with the speed of light across partisan airwaves and the Internet the din drowning out the country's moderate political center.
Countless Internet blogs have taken on the administration of the first African-American president, claiming falsely that Barack Obama isn't an American citizen, is a secret Muslim, is a socialist, wants to establish death panels to decide when elderly Americans would no longer receive medical care and be allowed to die. The list is long.
Most recently, a partisan furor blew up when Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. Republican national chairman Michael Steele set the tone, declaring that giving the prize to the U.S. commander in chief showed "how meaningless a once honorable and respected award has become."
Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush, was not immune, nor was former President Bill Clinton. But today the volume of screeching partisanship is cleaving the American electorate, perhaps as deeply as at any time since the Civil War a century and a half ago.

When I first looked, I saw "the ADMIRATION of the first African-American president"
Which would be true for the vast liberal majority of them
Can’t win fair and square,, Cheat!
Still can’t win, Lie.
When AP folds shop, we will all be the better for it.
Question is,, who will then be the purveyor of lies, half truths and spin?
Regardless of the subject, the AP’s “analysis” pieces have run in far too many newspapers for far too long.
They are nothing but the usual lefty agitprop but the AP and its subscriber newspapers apparently think that it should be printed in the news section where it can poison weak minds.
Did they look into that? I missed it. He admits he was a dual citizen; did they dig into which of his available citizenships he claimed once he was of age? For example, which passport did he use for travel to Pakistan? Or which citizenship he claimed in college? It makes a difference. I'm sure they know that, but I don't remember the Times getting to the bottom of that or anything else.
...is a secret Muslim...
I'll let that one slide. I think he's a marxist.
... is a socialist...
Bingo. I can't imagine its controversial at the Times that he's a socialist, and I can't imagine that socialism itself is controversial at the Times, so why are they pretending?
...wants to establish death panels to decide when elderly Americans would no longer receive medical care and be allowed to die...
Now, this is willful ignorance. Yes, there will be cost-benefit decisions about who gets treatment and who doesn't. It happens already in the US, and it happens a lot more in the UK. O's advisors and O himself have waxed eloquent on the need for seniors to slip quietly into that good night. If O and his gang aren't shy about admitting it why should the Times be?
“But today the volume of screeching partisanship is cleaving the American electorate, perhaps as deeply as at any time since the Civil War a century and a half ago.”
Not to worry, things will be much more friendly...... after the next one.
Hmmm, some conservative must have scored a direct hit, they’re bemoaning the partisan tone in politics. Never seems to merit attention when it’s a conservative or Republican taking the fire.
And since they think run around stating that citizenship accusations are false, I assume they have the real BC in hand. No?
I missed all these “concerned” dnc reporters when Pres Bush was attacked but all of a sudden poor odumbo
“Michael Steele set the tone, ........... “how meaningless a once honorable and respected award has become.”
Well, perhaps Steele was right.
Lets take a look at the presidents first 12 days in the White House to see all of the wonderful things he accomplished that made him so deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize.
January 20: Sworn in as president. Went to a parade. Partied.
January 21: Asked bureaucrats to re-write guidelines for information requests. Held an open house party at the White House.
January 22: Signed Executive Orders: Executive Branch workers to take ethics pledge; re-affirmed Army Field Manual techniques for interrogations; expressed desire to close Gitmo (hows that working out?)
January 23: Ordered the release of federal funding to pay for abortions in foreign countries. Lunch with Joe Biden; met with Tim Geithner.
January 24: Budget meeting with economic team.
January 25: Skipped church.
January 26: Gave speech about jobs and energy. Met with Hillary Clinton. Attended Geithner’s swearing in ceremony.
January 27: Met with Republicans. Spoke at a clock tower in Ohio.
January 28: Economic meetings in the morning, met with Defense secretary in the afternoon.
January 29: Signed Ledbetter Bill overturning Supreme Court decision on lawsuits over wages. Party in the State Room. Met with Biden.
January 30: Met economic advisers. Gave speech on Middle Class Working Families Task Force. Met with senior enlisted military officials.
January 31: Took the day off.
February 1: Skipped church. Threw a Super Bowl party.
That’s All Folks...
Claiming "falsely" that the former junior US Senator from Illinois isn't an American citizen? I believe that the claim is that he's not a natural born citizen. There's a difference, and this writer knows that but is obscuring the facts.
That the man whose school records list him as "Islamic" is a secret Muslim? I don't think it's much of a secret.
Claiming that the man who said "When you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody" is a socialist? I thought Obama expressed himself quite clearly on that day, and the views he advocates are socialist, whether or not he admits that truth.
Death panels? Obama made it quite clear that Palin was wrong on that and promised to take them out of the bill ... since he got caught.
The author is right: the list is long, and Obama is anti-freedom, anti-God, and anti-American on every issue I can name.
