By your puerile definition of "discover," nothing can ever be discovered.
Even penicillin existed before Alexander Fleming "discovered" it.
Gheeez!
On the other hand, when Christopher Columbus re-discovered America it was never lost again.
......................Yes, Leif Ericson discovered America five hundred years before Christopher Columbus. It was, however, promptly un-discovered, forgotten, lost in the ancient runes, faded into oblivion...................
That is true!
Interesting that before the days of “Microsoft” the news or rumors of a discovery of a new land, 1200 miles to the West, could not have made news through all the civilizations of the time.
It must have been that the brutal Viking’s, ostracised from the “civilization of Medieval Europe, were able to keep their “secret findings” of land to the west, secret for almost 500 years.
Today, a new finding would race around the world in sixteen nano-seconds!
Technology is amazing!
Yet, our politicians have been able to keep the public uninformed about a secret nuclear Iranian installation they knew about years ago! I really wonder what Zer0, Hitlery, and all the losers in this administration really know about the world, and what they are covering up on their way to Socialism!
Truly scary!
In the late 15th Century, there were magnificent cathedrals all over Europe. I can’t think of a single permanent building in North America at the time of Columbus’ landing. Now, further south, in modern day Mexico, there were some very advanced structures, such as the temples at Teotihuacan, just outside Mexico City. Imagine what was going through Cortez’ mind when the Conquistadores first laid eyes on them.
Gazing on such wonderful sights, we did not know what to say, or whether what appeared before us was real, for on one side, on the land, there were great cities, and in the lake ever so many more, and the lake itself was crowded with canoes, and in the Causeway were many bridges at intervals, and in front of us stood the great City of Mexico, and we - we did not even number four hundred soldiers! and we well remembered the words and warnings given us by the people Huexotzingo and Tlaxcala, and the many other warnings that had been given that we should beware of entering Mexico, where they would kill us, as soon as they had us inside.
Bernal Diaz del Castillo, The Discovery and Conquest of Mexico
This whole riff on “discovered” was explored by Stan Freberg in his famous album, Stan Freberg Presents The United States of America (1961). Not quite Firesign Theater, but trending that way. In one bit he has the Indians mentioning to Columbus, that “We discovered you.” Columbus retorts, “What do you mean ‘you discovered me?’ ... I discovered you! “ The Indian replies, “We come along, discover you here on beach!” “Oh, I see.” says Columbus.
From memory folks! 45 years!
I was simply mocking the idiots who are re-writing history because it glorifies a white man.
I am so stealing that ;)
