You don't work in the arts or "social sciences", do you? My profession in the arts runs to somewhere around 50%.

When I worked in the garment trade, entire divisions would be populated by b*tchy women, and b*tchier gay men.

Dunno about their activism, but again, they were there because they were good at designing clothes. "Gay" wasn't really a qualification.
