Star-Ledger Spurns Christie, Corzine; Endorses Independent
NBC New York ^ | Mon, Oct 12, 2009 | MICHAEL CLANCY

Finally, a third party candidate is getting some serious consideration in the highly corrupt and dysfunctional Garden State.

Independent candidate for New Jersey governor Chris Daggett has picked up the endorsement of the Star-Ledger, the state's largest daily newspaper, in an editorial published Sunday. It cited the need for "radical change" in how state government operates, saying Daggett's election would repudiate the status quo and put "a highly qualified occupant" in the governor's office.

"(Our) decision is less a rejection of Gov. Jon Corzine and Republican Chris Christie than a repudiation of the parties they represent, both of which have forfeited any claim to the trust and confidence of the people of New Jersey," the editorial stated. "They share responsibility for the state's current plight."

The perennially corrupt Garden State can only get healthy by rejecting both Democrats and Republicans, the paper editorialized.

"The lamentable fact is that the two parties are, themselves, little more than narrow special interests," the endorsement said. "Their competition for short-term political and/or monetary gain has jeopardized the state’s long-term economic health and left it with a tarnished national reputation." Daggett said he appreciated the support.

"I've spoken clearly and specifically about the problems we face, and I also laid out fairly specific solutions that I was hoping would resonate with people," he said Sunday afternoon. "There's a general feeling that politics as usual is not enough. People in New Jersey want to hear the truth and they want credible options and solutions, based on honest assessment."

The New York Times also profiled the candidate with the "wonkish, occasionally witty but mostly sober delivery" noting that the substance of his property tax credit plan has caught the imagination of some Jersey voters and filled the vacuum created frontrunner's mostly negative campaign ads. But the paper noted that the 59-year-old was more likely to play the role of spoiler than pull off an upset himself.

But Daggett doesn't want to hear talk about being a spoiler.

“It’s like the ’73 Mets,” he told the Times. “Ya gotta believe!”

This should be great news for Christie, by draining votes away from Corzine.

No it won’t. It will draw moderates away from Christie and Corzine will still get his hardcore Dems in a Dem state. So, Christie will end up losing, and that is probably the intent of this newspaper in the first place, to talk up the third party candidate knowing it will benefit Corzine and throw him the election. That’s the actual politics going on here. Dirty politics in NJ, as usual.

This all seems like a conspiracy to keep a Dem as Governor even when the populace is against him.

Maybe. But I still think it will draw more Corzine votes, because his snob voters will move away just because the independent has a little press support now. The conservatives won’t be fooled, and it may be the Corzine’s moderates who will leave him.

Not really, any votes for the third party candidate is a vote taken away from Christie. The Star-Ledger knows it can back away from Corzine and not hurt him in the election. They know what they are doing. Once a MSM rat always a MSM rat.

It really depends on who the third party is trying to go after, If it’s conservatives or even populist moderates, the idea is to weaken conservatives and give Corzine a win. NBC is probably trying out a strategy to divide conservative to preserve the dysfunctional one party Democrat state.

Christine is toast. He is “fat” afterall and that is enought to disqualify him in the minds of the liberal New Jersey drones. These are the same drones who drone on and on about how tired they are of the corruption, high taxes, businesses leaving the state, etc. But they will take all of that as long as a “fat” guy is not the governor. Gay, well that is A-OK, but dear Lord, not fat, not that!!!!

The Ledger, New Jersey’s largest fish wrapper, is an integral part of the Democrap Party, and does nothing with out the approval of the Party of Corruption! The Democraps, the Ledger, and corruption are perfect together.

Especially in a tight race as th is, the Third Party loon is taking votes away from Christie.

Third Parties are the Democrats best friend.

One reason Franken beat Coleman in Minn
and other state elections.

“The conservatives won’t be fooled”

Is there a conservative running? I recall voting for Lonegan in the Republican primary, but since then I haven’t noticed any conservative in the race.

Daggett, who worked for both Ray Bateman and Tom Kean has just as good Republican credentials as Christie, probably better. But it’s also perfectly true that he could throw the race to Corzine.

I won’t decide until election day who has the best chance to beat Corzine.

ping... especially to New Jersey FReepers.

It appears that the third party guy - Chris Daggett (I) - is causing problems for Chris Christie. Christie and Corzine are now at a dead heat:

New Jersey Governor - Corzine vs. Christie (Real Clear Politics)

I think Daggett may just be the Perot of the NJ Governor race.

...and I also think that Corzine has his fingers in this pie just as Clinton did.
