Afghan official: foreigners bolstering Taliban

KABUL – Thousands of foreign fighters have poured into Afghanistan to bolster the Taliban insurgency, the country's defense minister said Saturday as he called for more international troops.

The remarks come as the U.S. debates whether to substantially increase its forces in Afghanistan or to conduct a more limited campaign focused on targeting al-Qaida figures — most of whom are believed to be in neighboring Pakistan.

The minister's comments hit on a key worry of the United States — that not sending enough troops to Afghanistan will open the door back up to al-Qaida. They also suggest that the Afghan government is nervous about the U.S. commitment amid talk of changing the strategy and a surge in violence in recent months.

An American and two Polish troops were killed by bombs in the latest violence reported by NATO forces.

“The enemy has changed. Their number has increased,” Defense Minister Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak told lawmakers in a speech. He said about 4,000 fighters, mostly from Chechnya, North Africa and Pakistan “have joined with them and they are involved in the fighting in Afghanistan.”

He gave no timeframe for the supposed increase in foreign fighters.

NO> NO>NO!!! The Messiah’s chief ‘military’ advisor Joe ‘BS’ Biden has assured us that their are only about 100 Al Qaeda left in Afghanistan, the rest are over in Pakistan waiting to be blown up by Hellfires from our Predators.

Don’t those dimwit Aghani gov’t officials know they are supposed to be toeing the company line about Al Qaeda? Besides the ‘forgeign fighters’ are probably not Al Qaeda, they are just lost pilgrims on their way to Mecca who made a wrong turn.

Reminiscent of the NVA coming down the Ho Chi Minh Trail and across from Cambodia and Laos.

It’s time to let the boys up at Ellsworth warm up the 52’s. Let’s put an end to this crap.

A non-brainer, really. Shut down the Iraqi theater that attracted those idiots to their slaughter and they head for the only game in town. Except it is a lot harder to deal with them in Afghanistan than it was in Iraq. How long will it be before Obambi has them coming here to join in the battle?

LOL.. My thought exactly.. Maybe it is time to close a few passes, clear a few valleys, nothing like a few saturation runs to rearrange the compounds. that many have to be congregating somewhere..

” He gave no timeframe for the supposed increase in foreign fighters. “

Yeah.
Obviously, it must have been before January 20, 2009...
Because the last nine months the CINC has been focused like a laser on the war in Afghanistan.
He’s in the Oval Office before 7 am getting briefings on what happened overnight in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Oh wait, that was President Bush’s schedule.
Barry sleeps in as he told the world yesterday .
Wonder what time he would have gotten out of bed if his daughters hadn’t awakened him ?
From the schedule posted at http://www.politico.com/politico44/
Barry is rarely, if ever, in the Oval before 9:15 am .

What I read here is that to oppose the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan, they might attack alQaeda in Pakistan.

That reminds me of the guy fishing for something he dropped down a sewer grate in a city street at night, only he was fishing on the opposite side of the street because the light was better there.

My gut feeling is that Obama will somehow manage to vote ‘present’ on this problem and that he will get away with any bad results by blaming the military and/or Bush.

Generally speaking, yes. But jihadists of every ilk are flocking to where the fighting is happening. I am sure some Taliban went to Iraq when the fighting was the thickest just as I’m sure AlQ, Hezzies, and the other assorted nuts are heading to Afghanistan now that the fighting there is center stage.

But there’s a difference to this Afghan war. It’s ranging over vast deserts and steep mountains, whereas in Iraq the emphasis was in the cities.
