The number of children who have died from the swine flu has jumped sharply as the virus continues to spread widely around the United States, striking youngsters, teenagers, young adults and pregnant women unusually often, federal officials said Friday.
The deaths of another 19 children and teenagers from the new H1N1 virus were reported in the past week around the country, including two in Maryland, pushing the total number of fatalities to 76 among those younger than age 18. It was the largest number of pediatric deaths reported in a single week since the pandemic began last spring.
"These pediatric deaths seem to be increasing substantially," said Anne Schuchat, who heads the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.
While most of the children who have died have had other health problems that made them particularly vulnerable, such as asthma, muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy, about 20 percent to 30 percent were otherwise healthy, Schuchat said.
Between 46 and 88 children died from the seasonal flu in each of the last three years, so the fact that so many have already succumbed is disturbing, Schuchat said.
"It's only the beginning of October," she said, noting that the flu season usually starts much later and runs through May. "We saw a peak of deaths, you know, starting April, May, June. It started to level off this summer. Now it's starting to shoot up again."
In addition to the two deaths in Maryland, three were reported in Tennessee, seven occurred in Texas and one occurred in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.
The increase in pediatric deaths comes as the federal government's unprecedented vaccination campaign is just getting underway. Millions of doses of vaccine began arriving around the country this week.

No - that’s not all he came up with. Before the segment ended he said the vaccine is necessary for economic reasons - people are sick, they miss work, businesses close. Quite a departure from: our moral and ethical obligation to protect our neighbors. I too, had trouble believing my ears at that. Disappointing that he is a regular Fox contributor.

Raise the daily intake of Vitamin D3 to 4000 units per day (available in gelcaps in 2000 unit doses, take two each day) and don’t let an asthmatic child back to school while many are sick with this flu. Home school for the time being for any asthmatic kids.
For any immuno compromised kid, have the injectible vaccine in NON-Thimerasol dose. DO NOT accept the nasal mist for an asthamtic child!

BS. There is no indication that this flu is worse than any other flu. They quote weekly statistics and try to interpolate the numbers as meaning that this is a deadly flu. They want to impose restrictions on us, and this is one way to do it.
You are, to put it simply, an idiot. Swine flu is being used as the excuse for deaths caused by other means. If you think they are playing this down your brain has a short circuit. The CDC and other government agencies are trying to blow this into a large scale epidemic and they are failing, therefore they are ramping up the BS. Believe what you want, but know that your stupidity knows no bounds if you believe the crap you just wrote.
6-11 year olds can definitely take it.
We are doing 2000 iu for my daughter who is on anti-seizure medication because the medication strips her of vitamin D and she is low.
For the other 2 (12 & 15), we are doing 1000 iu.
I would ask your pediatrician (or look online).
I know about not taking the flu mist. Our asthma doctor also reminded us not to take that.
Unfortunately, that’s what is available.
There is indication that it is worse for epilepsy.

There were 200 kids out at my son’s high school this week. That is way more than average.
His friends are getting fevers of 103. That’s pretty high for high schoolers.
What's up with that? Why put live virus in a spray which then spreads the virus to everyone in the room? That's just nuts.

Where did you get that information? I heard a doctor on FoxNews just yesterday specifically say that none of the vaccines are made in China, although vaccines may be produced from components that originate in China.
I did a search not too long ago for different chemicals, etc. Disturbingly, it is difficult to find many that don't come from China.
I have none of those symptoms, and I don’t get more than one cold every couple or few years (knocks wood).
Looks like it’s as toxic as thimerosal. I’d never go near anything like that. Good luck.

Sure there is. The 1918 flu was an H1N1 variant. Swine flu in the human population is rare. Swine flus that show up in the human population can swap DNA with human flu, and the resulting mutation can be highly lethal. Human flu kills the weak. H1N1 mutations kill the young and healthy. It makes the immune system go into overdrive and you drown in your own antibodies. In 1918 people began showing symptoms in the morning and by evening they were dead. There’s no way of knowing if this H1N1 will mutate into something as virulent as 1918 but the potential is there with human flu season now starting.
