Flu vaccines do not undergo the same multi-year FDA approval procedures as new drugs. That's impossible as the virus mutates and new vaccines must be made every year. Furthermore, the vaccine-making process can not even start until new stains show up early in the flu season, so the window for manufacture is just a few months. This has always been the case.

Most of the crap you see here and else-where is simple fear-mongering and paranoia. BTW, the H1N1 vaccines do not contain adjuvants, which are chemicals to stimulate the immune system in general, and are definitely to be avoided. Also, single-dose vaccines without the mercury-based preservative are available, and if you do get the vaccine, you could get a mercury-free one.

Getting any vaccine can be a difficult choice. It depends on the state of your health, immune system, risk of exposure, and other individual circumstances. Your best bet is to have a frank discussion with a doctor you really respect and trust, and I know that even finding such a doctor can be difficult. If you do that, go prepared with specific questions you want answered. Write them down. Also, try and see if you can research the issues a bit yourself, trying to find legitimate web sites (not the tin-foil hat ones), so that you have some basis of judging the veracity of your doctor's advice, and which questions you want answered.

I wish you the best of luck in making this difficult decision.

[[Most of the crap you see here and else-where is simple fear-mongering and paranoia.]]

Fear-monguering and paranoia based on false information and overblown rumors- While noone wants somethign like Guillian Barre syndrome- it is VERY rare, and NOT gettign hte flu shot puts you at greater risk of contracting it if you get a lung infection from the flu- which this swine flu WILL cause in p[eople (lungs autopsied showed massive lung damage similar to hte bird flu- and htose that survive the swine flu are at a higher than normal risk of getting permanent lung damage that can never be reversed)

[[Getting any vaccine can be a difficult choice. It depends on the state of your health, immune system, risk of exposure, and other individual circumstances.]]

True- it’s a tough choice, but we also have to think about our neighbors as well- while we might be healthy, and might survive the flu just fine, without a shot, our neighbors who have compromised immune systems might not, and again, the risk of getting GB fro mthe shot compared to the risk we put others at by not getting the shot make it pretty clear which is safer and more ethical (unfortunately, this is a case of choosing hte ‘lesser of two evils’ ie: it’s better to concider our neighbors safety, and take a VERY small risk of getting GB [actually, there’s evidence we lessen our risk of getting GB by gettign flu shot], than to avoid the flu shot and put others with weakened immune systems at risk- I can’t tell you how many places I go into where peopel are coughing and sneezing because they can’t afford to take a day off)

GB is NO picnic to be sure, and I sure wouldn’t want anyone to get it, but again- let’s keep things in perspective- it’s VERY rare to get it, and Rarer still to die from it- but it is NOT nearly as rare to die fro m the flu- Even the regular flu

This is a crappy choice to make, I know, and hte best case scenario woudl be to not have to make the descision at all, but since this flu IS now a pandemic, and only goign to get worse (only 5% of world’s population has come down with hte flu so far- meaning htis thing isn’t even in full bloom yet, and already we’ve seen almost 14000 deaths from it) but let’s keep things in perspective, get the FACTS, and make personal descisions based on good sound facts, not itnernet hype and misinformation.

you’ve given good advice- I hope everyoen will carefully concider your posts and do liek oyu say- get educated by reputable sites about hte flu, get the TRUE stats o nthings liek GB cases, flu shot connectiosn to GB, Thermosol in some vaccines, etc, and make descisio nfro mthere- so far, with over several 100 thousand peopel being innoculated so far, and noone sufferign serious side effects sicne April, enoguh time has goen by to know whether the shot increased risk or not- and so far, the stats say NO it hasn’t- and infact may be protecting people from GB- While 1 more person per 100,000 get GB after gettign shot, how many more woudl have developped it IF noone had received the shots? My guess is that more people would have developped GB IF the flus were respiratory in nature

“Most of the crap you see here and else-where is simple fear-mongering and paranoia”

So are you referring to the H1N1 hysterical crowd or those who question the hysterical crowd?

“I wish you the best of luck in making this difficult decision.”

Difficult? Whats so difficult about it.
