Romney Reboots - Thinking about 2012
National Review. Online ^ | FROM THE 10/19/09 ISSUE OF NR | RAMESH PONNURU

Posted on 10/08/2009 11:58:49 PM PDT by Lucius Cornelius Sulla

In the early stages of the undeclared race for the Republican presidential nomination, Mitt Romney is the frontrunner. The former governor of Massachusetts has the best-developed national network of supporters of any of the potential candidates. He is the one doing the most party-building across the country; of his potential rivals, only Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty comes close. He is the one to whom other Republicans are most likely to turn for answers on economic policy, and on many issues he is the only one giving them. When the auto companies came to Washington only Romney had a plan (“Detroit needs a turnaround, not a check,” he wrote in the New York Times).
. . . . . . . . . .
Yet it is extremely difficult — more difficult than many people realize — to capture the Republican presidential nomination from the right in the modern era. The politics of religion largely account for this difficulty. The movement candidacy always runs a risk of being destroyed by an evangelical candidacy. No movement candidate can win without strong support from evangelical voters. But an evangelical candidate running on the basis of his religion can win a lot of votes from his coreligionists, and thus block the movement candidate’s progress, without being able to win the nomination himself. As Huckabee showed in the last race, the evangelical candidate need not be well-known or well-funded to play this role. Pat Robertson played it in 1988. (Pat Buchanan splintered the movement in a slightly different way in 1996.)

This article by Ponnuru, from the RINO side of NR, is mostly a technical analysis of Romney's prospects, but is interesting IMHO because of the second paragraph. It was partially the cause of the failure of the Thompson campaign, and would cause us problems in 2012.

Apparently, there are those who claim to fall under the “Republican” label who are unwittingly looking to keep Barry in for another term.

Look on the bright side though, what Barry does not destroy in his first term, he will most likely get one hellva opportunity to finish in his second. =.=

If Romney turns out to be the 2012 candidate thenthe election just does not matter because he will only bring RINOs into the Congress with him. A party that nominates him will push conservatives off the congressional ballots and the Democrats will take more seats than the;y; otherwise would. This all of course discounts the ability of this Administration to control the elections in 2010 and beyond with ACORN(using its various AKAs). Buy ammo.

I am definitely NOT a Romney supporter but I think it is a good idea to find out what he is thinking and what political plans he has as we move into 2010 and 2011.

Like a football coach the more you scout the opposition the better prepared you will be.

Obama vs Romney.

I couldn’t vote for either. I’d vote constitution party or Alan Keyes or for the South American dude who ran on a green card.

I expect that there will be plenty of comments on NRO in disagreement to this article. I will link them to this thread after they’re posted.

Thompson’s problem wasn’t running from the right.

Thompson’s problem was he was sleeping.

NO candidate who ran in the GOP primaries last time should run this time. NONE of them were worth a pot to pee in. Thompson never had a chance because of his own self. His friendship with McCain was more important to him than the country.
Duncan Hunter was too narrow and unknown to most people.
If we don’t get a real conservative this time, we will never have another election. The left will be far too strong.
The GOP needs to close the primaries and do it soon. Any Independents or Libertarians who want to vote Republican can reregister, but NO democrats should ever again be allowed to cross over and hijack our votes.

None of these doofuses can defeat Obama in 2012. And Sarah should skip it until 2016, earning allies, IOUs and campaign cash across America on the way.

Romney would be stopped in Iowa.

He was destroyed by WHO Des Moines morning host Jan Mickleson--became a raving fool and a paranoid.

He was viscerally confronted by the Huckabee-advocate afternoon host Steve Deace.

All on top of Romney's having presented as a cowardly backstabber of the Republican hope, Sarah Palin.

Heard again today of the mess of Massachusetts health care--this is what Romney would bring to the table.

What does he represent besides his own ambition.

There's no there there.

We've already got that to excess inside the Beltway.

Unless a candidate can divert a river to clean the Augean Stables, he should stay home.

No need to read past this. BS, based on what? Republican grass roots movements across the country say otherwise.
