The police had Letterman’s attorney meet one more time (before the check was handed over), specifically for the purpose of getting Haldeman to say that he knew this was illegal, and was backmail, and reportedly Haldeman said, yes, he understood. This is supposedly on tape.

This is supposedly on tape. Sounds like Haldeman wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.
I guess he was used to his targets "confessing" on camera, and thought it was OK.
