The D.C. Council voted Tuesday to block Ximena Hartsock from becoming the next director of the Department of Parks and Recreation, aggravating the tension between the council and the mayor and casting fresh doubt on the future of the troubled agency. After a long debate, the council voted 7 to 5 to reject Hartsock and remove her as the head of an agency that has had seven permanent or interim directors in the past decade. It was the first time since Fenty took office in 2007 that the council had rejected one of his nominees ...The vote followed a contentious hearing Friday night that brought cries of racial and ethnic bias after council member Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) implied that Hartsock, who is Hispanic, did not understand black culture....the Fenty administration seized on Barry's remarks and slammed the council for rejecting a Hispanic nominee.
"Outrageous. Outrageous," Attorney General Peter Nickles said. "One of the most qualified Latinas in the city. A PhD. A principal. . . . She was treated unfairly."...
Tuesday also saw dozens of activists on both sides of the same-sex marriage debate cram into the council chambers to watch the introduction of a bill to allow same-sex couples to wed in the District.... Catania was joined by nine of his colleagues in sponsoring the bill, which is expected to pass easily. I see what you mean.
A wise Latina woman.
Is that the MARION BARRY?
He used to go by Barry, now it is Barak
The whole thing is a travesty. It has come down to this: Washington, DC city council, which presides over one of the worst, most corrupt, most inept and incompetent municipal governments in the country, is fighting over who holds the highest race card.
Yes. That would be him. The one and only. Despite the fact that he has been busted for drugs again, and hasn’t paid his federal taxes, he is still on the DC Council.
But Latinas are WISE! D.C. is being totally dopey here.
“Is that the MARION BARRY?”
....yep that’s him alright...he represents Anacostia...the worst ward in the city...a ward just brimming with “black culture”....a ward that didn’t have a single sit-down restaurant....the ghetto chinese to-go was passed thru a window...just like the crack.
Does Marion Barry represent black culture? I hope not.
In DC he IS black culture.
You forgot to mention the fact that all the supermarkets closed there because of their theft rates. Since then, they have been complaining that the lack of major grocery stores is “racist.”
...I’m not surprised...I used to have to drive thru Anacostia when I was working and dreaded it....even in the day time...I guess it’s part of “black culture” to run red lights and stop signs in Anacostia....especially when you have no insurance or title to the vehicle.
In Buffalo, NY in the 70s a black businessman opened up a supermarket in the middle of the ghetto where a chain store had failed. He called it FIGMOS (Finally I Got My Own Supermarket). Lasted about a year. When interviewed after the store closure, he said “They robbed me blind.”
