Al-Qaida showing smaller presence in Afghanistan

KABUL – Al-Qaida's role in Afghanistan has faded after eight years of war. Gone is the once-formidable network of camps and safe houses where Osama bin Laden and his mostly Arab operatives trained thousands of young Muslims to wage a global jihad. The group is left with fewer than 100 core fighters, according to the Obama administration, likely operating small-scale bomb-making and tactics classes conducted by trainers who travel to and from Pakistan.

President Barack Obama said Tuesday that al-Qaida has "lost operational capacity" after a series of military setbacks and vowed to continue the battle to cripple the terror organization.

With the U.S. reassessing how to achieve that objective, the key question now is whether al-Qaida could reconstitute its Afghan base even if its Taliban allies regain power.

NATO casualties have risen dramatically this year at the hands of a resurgent Taliban,

Along with all the dems speaking out against McChrystal, this is part of a coordinated effort to discredit the in theater commander and appease the lunatic base.

LOL. Part of the Obama disinformation program.

Flanked by heavily armed fighters, the new leader of the Pakistani Taliban sat on a blue blanket, amiable and relaxed as he cracked jokes and mixed in threats of vengeance for deadly U.S. airstrikes. He also described his group's relationship to al-Qaida as one of "love and affection." Osama bin Laden and other top al-Qaida leaders are believed to be hiding out in the remote border region with Afghanistan, possibly in territory controlled by Hakimullah.

The militant vowed to retaliate against the U.S. and Pakistan for deadly attacks on his allies and said his fighters will repel an anticipated Pakistani offensive into his stronghold.

I’m not sure I understand the point of Afghanistan.

The enemy is in Pakistan.

Pakistan = Cambodia/Laos

How North Vietnam Won The War
Bui Tin Interviewed by Stephen Young
The Wall Street Journal, 3 August 1995

http://www.viet-myths.net/buitin.htm

Bui Tin, who served on the general staff of North Vietnam’s army, received the unconditional surrender of South Vietnam on April 30, 1975. He later became editor of the People’s Daily, the official newspaper of Vietnam.

Q: How could the Americans have won the war?
A: Cut the Ho Chi Minh trail inside Laos. If Johnson had granted [Gen. William] Westmoreland’s requests to enter Laos and block the Ho Chi Minh trail, Hanoi could not have won the war.

Q: What else?
A: We had the impression that American commanders had their hands tied by political factors. Your generals could never deploy a maximum force for greatest military effect.

Suspected? I'd hate to see what they fire at known enemy positions.

I guess Obama was not too successful in getting the other NATO members to contribute more combat troops. Too bad everyone seems to forget that Obama claimed that “success” after meeting with European leaders about four months ago.

Be prepared for a relentless campaign of Obama and the old liberal media saying Al Qaeda is no longer a threat in Afghanistan.

Yeah, most the American people Obama hopes. I guess if you minimize the presence of AQ in Afghanistan, you can start bringing the troops home. Declare victory and leave.

>>> LOL. Part of the Obama disinformation program. <<<<

How is that disinfo.

Islamists are constantly being killed in the NWFP and Waziristan etc by our Predator attacks.

Many terrorist plotters have been captured in Pakistan, e.g., KSM, Ramzi Binalshibh, Ramzi Yousef, Daniel Pearl’s killers).

From what I’ve read over the years including recently, the Taliban and aQ are almost all taking refuge in Pakistan.

It’s been that way since 9/11.
