I've read some about the process, but from what I understand the results are often unstable and unreliable. Soap requires fairly precise measurements so you have to calculate the saponification values of the types of oil you use in relation to the sodium or potassium hydroxide that you use. If you can't rely on the strength of the lye, you have lost the calculations before you begin and will wind up with a useless goop.

If you know of some good literature on the process, please pass it on.

That phrase (Evil can only succeed if good men don't point at it and laugh.) would make a heckuva T-shirt...of course with a pic of the Comedian.

Aw, shucks, do it, and donate the proceeds to FR :-)

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

http://www.journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_ashlye.html

This linked website is my only reference, I remember my mother making soap with lye and she said she had seen it done with wood ashes, the only drawback she mentioned was that it was more work. The website describes what sounds like an accurate way to test the strength of the solution by using a homemade tool to determine specific gravity. They recommend hardwood ashes only and I found it interesting that they recommend Apple wood ashes for white soap. Only rainwater is recommended for the leaching process so as to avoid minerals, I would probably use water from a dehumidifier.

""It's a free country, brother." Struck because I would hear that expression often when I was young but hadn't heard it voiced in years. "

Yep! It's been many, many decades since that was a 100% valid statement.

Individuals have been subjected to ever increasing numbers of quietly draconian laws that eat away at individual freedom & liberty for a long time.

However, beginning with RICO, the growth in these laws has accelerated enormously.....particularly since 1994 when the Republocrats gained controlled of congress.

Truth be told, excluding the frenzy of the final unstoppable rush into tyranny that began last January, the most massive increases in the number of these specious laws occurred primarily under the GOP-controlled Congresses of the 90's and 2000's.

Neither party has earned the trust of people who wish merely to be left alone.

Because you do need to know.

Why am I just finding out now?

This seems like something that should have been big news at the time. One post to FR and our minions would have been all over it.

How is the government keeping this nonsense quiet?

I wouldn't be surprised if it was posted here a few years ago. Not likely it would be found in any search.

They should have just planted a few grams of pot on the lady. Then half the people here would be cheering.

Note to the powers that be.

Candidates running on a platform to only introduce and vote for repealing laws are the future.

Literal wolves are one thing. The ones in AZ and NM have collars on them and you will go to jail for shooting.

We have all kinds of wolves at our doors these days, even humans that have a pack mentality and we need to wise up now before they stalk us. (By the way, just because I am paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t there.)

I have watched/studied the power of this community organizing network for years and their misuse of Government at all levels. Obama has placed very radical people in positions of power and they do have a pack mentality.

Let that be. Laws should be few and clear.

Hardwood ashes in a flower pot makes the best lye you can’t buy.
