And THAT's the problem, right there.
The liberal Vicki Imogene interpretation of "What Would Jesus Do" simply allows the heedless and lazy to sidestep their personal obligation to care for the poor and needy by claiming that the government can do it 'better'. (Against every sort of evidence to the contrary, btw, but that's not relevant to the point here).
God did not command that you give "X Dollars" to the poor. He said, though, that you must give - not some faceless government bureaucrat who takes a huge chunk of your tax dollars for himself before any of it helps a poor person. If you can't tithe because of your obligations (including your tax burden), give what you can. If you don't have any money, give of your time.
Thinking that enforced tax on others for the benefit of politically favored groups somehow constitutes 'charity' violates any number of Biblical principles -- including 'render unto Caesar', 'he who will not work shall not eat', 'the Lord loveth a cheerful giver', the principle of subsidiarity, and of course 'thou shalt not steal'.
??? I do give, both through taxes, and through personal donations. The money I pay in taxes that is designated towards medical, is more efficiently distributed, I believe, than what I could do myself. The monies I personally give to medical charities, I do not know the admin costs.
