After Chicago’s Loss, Critics Assail the U.S.O.C. (blame game ... yawn)
NYT ^ | 10/3/09 | Katie Thomas

For weeks, the United States Olympic Committee and the national sports governing bodies it oversees had settled into an uncomfortable truce. Despite a year of upheaval and conflict, the parties had agreed to set aside their differences in solidarity for Chicago’s bid to win the 2016 Summer Games.

The truce ended as quickly as Chicago was dispatched from the race won by Rio de Janeiro. In surprisingly frank terms, a number of influential people in American Olympic sports questioned the performance of the U.S.O.C.’s new management team and said its two top executives were ill-equipped to navigate the insular world of international sports.

Chicago’s last-place finish in the I.O.C. voting on Friday in Copenhagen was the latest blow in a year marked by the departure of major sponsors, layoffs at U.S.O.C. headquarters, controversy over the salary of the acting chief executive, and the failed plan for an Olympic television network.

“Before we think about putting forth another Olympic city for a Games possibility, we’ve got to deal with some outstanding issues that are not going to go away,” said Mike Plant, who serves on the U.S.O.C.’s 10-member board and traveled to Copenhagen as part of the Chicago delegation. “I think that certainly there will be some dialogue that’s going to take place in the next couple of weeks — or certainly in short order.”

So I guess the U.S.O.C. is stocked full of racist, right-wing, nazi, bigoted red neck fear mongers?

The beauty of liberal failure, they cannot begin to fathom that they were solely responsible for the failure. So they will rationalize the loss as someone else’s fault and charge ahead again full steam towards the cliff they know is there.

Hard to see why the Olympic Committee is supposed to be impressed by Oprah, who has made a career of sitting on a couch overstating the obvious. There’s no Olympic event that requires these skills.

The IOC & USOC have been at odds for quite some time (mostly about $$$). But this was known during the entire bid process.

Methinks the Chicago bid team was into some serious self-delusion.

The IOC chose to NOT hold its games in a filthy, crime-ridden city. Gee...go figure, huh! Rio may not be a whole lot better, but are there 30 murders each week?

Don’t forget that Halliburton and Dubya ordered the IOC to screw Obeyme. It’s always Bush’s fault..

I read an earlier article wherein the libRAT who wrote it said the “right-wing Obama-haters” would try to blame this on Obama. My first thought was, why shouldn’t we? The fact is had the IOC chosen Chicago Obama supporters would be crediting him for that decision. It would, of course, be all because of him. But now that Chicago has been rejected it’s not at all his fault. They can’t have it both ways.

How about the luge? She’d go down the course pretty quickly.

Thank goodness for the clowns in Copenhagen. Now Rio gets saddled with the cost. My Brazilian relatives think it will cost the country $26 Billion by the time you include the graft. Maybe Hugo had something to do with the voting - just wondering.

Why are these people getting themselves all wee-wee’d up?
Saint Obama has already told us that victory isn’t important.

He has told the world that what is of importance is that the USA doesn’t try to be any more special than any other country.

But wasn’t it something out of “The Ugly American” when Obama took four jumbo-jets loaded with his staff, accoutrenments and his arrogant worshippers and tried to steamroller the IOC with their fables about growing up poor in racist America?

After all, it was their show; their day in the sun and he tried to steal the limelight.

Maybe the rest of the world is as sick of Obama inserting himself into every aspect of existence as are we Americans

People used to joke about the Clintons sucking all the air out of a room but they were small cheese compared to Obama.

They fly in separately on two jets with an entourage that would make the mafia blush. Good grief, they even brought Daily and Oprah! For openers, Obama puts down his own country. Even if some of their audience did hate the USA, everyone disrespects a turncoat.

Then Michelle has the audacity to say how some would consider her trip a sacrifice. Can you imagine how Americans would react if the wife of a foreign head of state came here and announced that some would consider this a sacrifice on her part? I think that alone sunk the deal.

Doesn’t sound like Rio is exactly Nirvana....
“This new study by a think tank linked to the Roman Catholic Church suggests that things are improving. In 1994, out of every 100,000 inhabitants of Rio, 78 met a violent death.

Last year that figure had fallen to 50. In a way, this is a surprise. The violent drug gangs which control Rio’s shanty towns are still very much alive, and until recently the city’s police force was better known for its brutality than for its efficiency.

However, analysts say a number of factors have contributed to the fall in the number of murders. The local government has invested millions of dollars in an effort to integrate the shanty towns into the urban infrastructure.

Police operations have reduced the extent to which drug-related violence spills over into middle-class areas, and local non-governmental organisations have waged a tireless campaign to persuade people not to carry firearms.

But Rio continues to be a violent place. Its new, lower murder rate is still five times as high as that of New York, and meanwhile, in Brazil’s biggest city. Sao Paulo, the tide of murders in poor areas is rising inexorably. “
