US Relinquishes Control of Internet
Guardian, UK ^ | September 30, 2009 | Bobbie Johnson

Posted on 10/02/2009 6:51:07 PM PDT by NorwegianViking

After complaints about American dominance of the internet and growing disquiet in some parts of the world, Washington has said it will relinquish some control over the way the network is run and allow foreign governments more of a say in the future of the system. Icann – the official body that ultimately controls the development of the internet thanks to its oversight of web addresses such as .com, .net and .org – said today that it was ending its agreement with the US government. The deal, part of a contract negotiated with the US department of commerce, effectively pushes California-based Icann towards a new status as an international body with greater representation from companies and governments around the globe. Icann had previously been operating under the auspices of the American government, which had control of the net thanks to its initial role in developing the underlying technologies used for connecting computers together. But the fresh focus will give other countries a more prominent role in determining what takes place online, and even the way in which it happens – opening the door for a virtual United Nations, where many officials gather to discuss potential changes to the internet. Icann chief Rod Beckstrom, a former Silicon Valley entrepreneur and Washington insider who took over running the organisation in July, said there had been legitimate concerns that some countries were developing alternative internets as a way of routing around American control. "It's rumoured that there are multiple experiments going on with countries forking the internet, various countries have discussed this," he said. "...He added that the changes would prove powerful when combined with upcoming plans to allow web users to use addresses with names in Chinese, Arabic or other alphabets other than Latin...

President Carter 1 gave away our Panama Canal, turned ally Iran into an Islamic enemy, etc.

President Carter 2 now seeks to give away the Internet, our nuclear weapons, bankrupt the Govt and install a neo-Fascist form of Govt. Plus continue and expand the Holocaust of “Women’s Right To Murder Babies”.

Wonderful.

There no reason each country can not operated there in-country Internet as a separate top country domain and just interconnect

So www.freerepublic.com would be www.freerepublic.com.us to anyone outside the ".us" domain and that ".us" routes you first in to the USA country domain and dns

This is no different then the world phone system

You have an in-country dialing plan and standards and then you have international access and country code to interconnect in to other countries networks with their dialing plan and standards

I thought Al Gore invented the internet! Don’t they need to ask Al before they give it to foreigners?

Well, we conservative’s have always been accused of talking in code. Maybe we need to invent one.

Or dig out the short-wave, teletype, or tin cans and a string...

President Carter gave up America’s selfish control of the Panama Canal we built; now it’s Obama’s turn to make a comparable gesture of American surrender by ceding control of the Internet we built.

The good news is that it may inspire congress to give back Washington D.C. to the British.

Don’t worry, the UN can’t censor our comments. This is all we have to do - *************************, then, *************, and also ***************.

“,,,you have to follow International standards! “

No.

The US cannot agree to any international law or treaty that jeopardizes any of our freedoms outlined in the constitution. If some fascist goon in China or a totalitarian at the UN tries to restrict speech here in the US, the courts will shoot it down. I have the court cases if you want to read them. The commies can censor what comes into their sh*tholes, but they can’t censor what’s said in America.

I don’t know the technical aspects, but I’m sure servers can route around any censorship attempts by the commies in other countries.

So I guess Icann can give control to the UN, but it won’t do any good as far as censorship here in America.

... free speech was probably LEAST threatened when it was under US control. Now, the political floodgates are OPENED!

Democrats will give away anything they can't apologize for - even stuff that's not theirs. That said, Obama hates free speech as much as any two bit dictator... I suspect he and the dems will be just thrilled with a boot on the Internets neck.

Can obumber do this on his own without the congress?

Congress has ceded its power to the executive and judicial branches for minimally several administrations. How many are aware that the DHC was created by Bush by Executive Order 13228 of October 8, 2001?

I’m sorry, but exactly how is the US Gummit controlling the internet?

As far as I know internet communication protocols are public domain. As far as I know I don’t need gov. permission to access the internet. As far as I know I don’t need gov. permission to log on to any particular site.

...The larger issue that I see is the problem of “international law” and regulations which hurt the US and US companies, trademarks and patents. The big money is now in “emerging” markets like China, India and other countries with little or no regulation, etc. Virtual slave labour. It’s greed like it’s always been, except now the US in on the short end of the stick. Just an opinion.

Excellent point. This part and parcel of establishing the New World Order which requires eliminating the US middle class and US sovereignty.
