The Olympics, Obama, and the Permanent Campaign (All 0, All the Time)
RealClearPolitics ^ | 10/2/2009 | Jay Cost

Chicago has lost its Olympics bid, despite Obama's insertion into the process. People are shocked because they figured that Obama would fly in if and only if the deal was done.

But why? That assumes a typical allocation of the presidential prestige. President Obama has been anything but typical in the use of that asset. Let's remember that this is the President who in the last nine months has appeared on both 11:30 PM talk shows. This is the President who can be seen on TBS in a spot advertising the upcoming George Lopez Show. This is the President who has had more primetime news conferences and more joint addresses to Congress than any president up to this point in his campaign tenure. This is the only President to pull a "Ginsberg" (and my guess is that he'll set the record for that when it's all said and done). This is the President who has gone out on the campaign trail again and again and again, even though the election is long since passed. This is the President who puts himself - and his family - on the cover of all sorts of supermarket and newsstand magazines month after month. This is the President who never hesitates to inject himself into the public consciousness for any little reason he likes.

This is the permanent campiagn. We have talked about its imminence for years. Well, now it's here and this is what it looks like. This is what a President does in it.

You know, when you fly around the world bad-mouthing your country, some people will believe it. And, when you announce that your country is no longer the leader of the free world some other people, who might have feared the consequences of your disappointment, will no longer be concerned about telling you ‘no’.

Actions have consequences... what a concept.

Blame it on Axelrod!

Because his former PR firm did all the work and was paid millions for the project of presenting Chicago’s bid.

Follow the money trail!

This needs to be investigated.

Four of the five co-chairs of Obama’sinaugural committee continue to have unpaid leadership roles in Chicago 2016, including Pat Ryan, the chairman and CEO of Chicago 2016; John Rodgers, the treasurer and director of Chicago 2016; Bill Daley, the former Clinton administration commerce secretary and brother of the Chicago mayor; and Penny Pritzker, the Chicago businesswoman and Hyatt hotel heiress who led Obama’s meteoric presidential campaign fundraising.

Pritzker’s family also owns or manages a handful of hotels singled out by Chicago 2016 as accommodations for Olympic workers, press and family members.

Ryan and Priztker each contributed $100,000 or more to Chicago 2016, as did White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers, an Obama family friend, who also served on the Chicago committee. It still counts Obama confidant and vacation companion Eric Whitaker among its members. Jarrett was replaced as vice chair by Martin Nesbitt, the treasurer of Obama’s campaign and another Obama family insider.

ASK Public Strategies, the Chicago-based corporate public relations company founded by Obama political guru David Axelrod and owned and run by some of Obama’s top presidential campaign consultants, was paid “in the tens of thousands” of dollars by Chicago 2016 to do “communication management [and] communication planning,” said former Axelrod partner Eric Sedler, who did not work for the Obama campaign but is in Copenhagen, along with Pritzker and Jarrett.

“ASK has worked on the bid for three years and for two thirds of that time our work has been pro bono,” said Sedler, who would not speculate on whether the company would be in line for more Olympic work if the IOC picks Chicago.

Obama: “Look at me! I am historic! Give me the Olympics!”

IOC: Yawn.

What should have been a story about Chicago - or better yet, Rio (good for you, Rio!) - is now a story about...Obama.

I heard only a small snippet of Obama's comments, but the gist of them seemed to be hold the Olympics in Chicago so I can walk there from my house. I just don't think that is persuasive.
