Haifa scientists successfully 'reprogram' human skin cells into heart cells

Haifa scientists have adapted an innovative Japanese gene-implantation technique and succeeded in "turning back the clock" for human skin cells, reprogramming them into artificial embryonic stem cells and then switching them into heart cells in the lab.

Although implementing this clinically to repair damaged human hearts is at least a decade or two away, the Israeli accomplishment can already be utilized for in-depth study of genetic diseases and the development of personalized drugs for inherited disorders, such as those involving irregular heartbeat.

I wonder if they learned this trick from studying the process by which embryonic stem cells go from totipotent, to pluripotent to multipotent? ... Like was predicted back when George Bush limited research funds to just the ESC lines already in existence?

Three cheers for Israel! Their research and technology contine to give the world discovery after discovery that are improving health care and saving lives around the globe, including those of the terrorists around them who are viciously jealous of Israel’s turning the desert into a font of good for mankind.
