Scaremongering (Virginia Governor Race)
Manassas News/Messenger ^ | 9/29/2009 | Charles Reichley

Posted on 09/30/2009 5:59:30 PM PDT by CharlesWayneCT

For all the claims of opponents, political advertisements rarely contain absolute falsehoods. When they do, even the most biased news outlets feel compelled to call out brazen lies.

But there is a wide gulf between outright lies and the truth. Much of the political warfare is fought in this murky battleground of “technically correct” and “deliberately misleading.” News organizations are less likely to police this turf, and when they do, enforcement is often clouded by the political leanings of the reporters and editors.

Here’s a little quiz. Which candidate for governor, being questioned by several reporters, turned to the female reporter and said “I think I’ve made myself clear, young lady?”

If you guessed Bob McDonnell, it’s probably because you are a victim of misleading advertising (and reporting) giving you a misperception about McDonnell. In fact, that statement was made by Creigh Deeds, when asked about his support for raising taxes.

...

Deeds seems uncomfortable speaking to those issues. For example, his “transportation plan” is to support tax increases, while passing on the actual job of producing a plan to a commission after the election. But distracting voters with scaremongering advertisements is not a good substitute for addressing the issues.

My article for this week's local newspaper. McDonnell (R) is up by 9 in the latest Rasmussen poll, so it looks like Deed's tactics aren't working -- a lot of editorials are attacking him now.

For those who like to say I'm a liberal here, I take solace in this anonymous comment to my column:

Reichley is just another of these twisted right-wing zealots bent on tearing down anyone with a (D) after their name by fabricating the most ridiculous, nonsensical, delusional insults they think they can get the Republican sheep to chuckle at.

The last Reichley article I read was sanctimoniously taking Obama to task for “mocking the memory of 9/11” by appointing Van Jones. An ignorant slap in the face intended to do little more than inflame the base.

Until the Republican party can figure out how to vomit these twisted right-wing extremist freaks from their party you’d be better off voting Democratic (or Green or Libertarian or anything else) this November.

When you can get called a "twisted right-wing zealot" and a "liberal troll" in the same month, you've obviously done something special :-)

Deeds just seems 'uncomfortable' period. Good article.

Hold his feet to the fire. His whole campaign seems to be based on lies, from what I have seen.

Bob McDonnell gets sheriffs’ support for governor

Sheriffs support McDonnell for governor

Date published: 9/30/2009

As local law enforcement officials, we would like to endorse Bob McDonnell as candidate for governor.

He is a man of principle and integrity. He has served this commonwealth admirably as a prosecutor, legislator, and, most recently, as our attorney general.

Bob’s background is one of public service. He is a veteran, having served 21 years, active and reserve, in the U.S. Army.

He began his law enforcement career as a prosecutor in Virginia Beach and was elected to the House of Delegates in 1991. His work to reform our juvenile justice system, abolish parole and institute “truth in sentencing,” and crack down on drunken drivers are just a few of the reasons we support him.

The Dems are worried about Dirty Deeds. They fear not only McDonnell will win, but the GOP will solidify its hold on the VA House and the possibility of a couple of Dem defections in the VA Senate. The Dems in the coming weeks, are going to throw mud at the GOP, it doesn’t matter if its true or not. The intention is to crank up black turnout and women turnout in the hopes that all the Obama voters from last year will vote in a non-presidential year.
