Letters From Hollywood: Roman Polanski's Rape of A Child No Big Thing

Does being an 'artist' trump being a rapist?" asks Melissa Silverstein of Women & Hollywood. According to 138 people in the film industry who signed a petition demanding the immediate release of Roman Polanski from Swiss custody, yep!

And they're joined by another group of writers and artists Bernard-Henri Lévy is rounding up! On his roster: Salman Rushdie, Milan Kundera, Neil Jordan, Isabelle Adjani, Isabelle Huppert, Mike Nichols, Diane von Furstenberg, and Paul Auster, among others. As for the other petition (launched by French film industry association SACD), in addition to the signatories posted at The Wrap last night (Pedro Almodovar, Wes Anderson, Darren Aronofsky, Monica Bellucci, Stephen Frears, Tilda Swinton?!?), new big-name rape apologists are signing on all the time! Today, we can add Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Terry Gilliam and — wait for it — Woody Allen to the list.

Woody Allen, people. It would be kind of funny, if it weren't a big f***ing list of celebrities who support a child rapist.

Also, let us not forget Whoopi "rape-rape" Goldberg, and of course Debra Winger's statement as president of the Zurich Film Festival jury. As Variety reported:

Winger... on Monday demanded Polanski's release and criticized Swiss authorities for their "philistine collusion" in arresting Polanski as he entered the country.

"This fledgling festival has been unfairly exploited, and whenever this happens the whole art world suffers," Winger said in a statement on Monday, standing together with the other four international jury members who wore red badges reading "Free Polanski" as they announced plans to continue the fest.

That's apparently what this is about, in the minds of all these great artistes: Philistinism. A failure to appreciate A) Polanski's genius and B) the sanctity of international film festivals. No, I am not even kidding about the second part.

If it was a Priest or Minister that abused a girl 50 years ago then stopped after realizing he was wrong, these same appeasers would be calling for his b+*^ls!

And its kind of fortunate that the evil priest scandal broke first, rather than the good but misunderstood director, because we have better legal precedent. Some of the lawsuits against priests went back decades in time.

I’m thinking this is a reverse case of “let him who is without sin...,” i.e., I suspect there’s more stuff like this that a lot of celebs are guilty of, at which we ordinary people would be appalled.

Clearly, Polanski was not judged, if you listen to his celeb defenders, by his peers. They could not condemn him for what they do or want to do.

Well, considering he also committed a heinous crime and pled for sympathy because of the recent murder of a family member, I’d guess he would side with the folks calling for leniency.

Good grief. “It isn’t rape when we do it!” Do any of these people have a 13-year-old daughter? Or a conscience?

On TV a while ago I saw the tape of Debra Winger supporting Polanski.

How disgusting.

She has always been one of my family’s favorite actresses, but no more.

What happens to these people when the spotlight hits them?
They just seem to lose all ability to reason.

SHUT UP AND ACT!

Well, my post was sarcastic, seeing as all the celebrities I listed were accused of rape themselves at some point. I have no idea if they really support Polanski or not.

Was anyone listening to Hannity this afternoon? I was only listening in my car for a short time but almost every man who called in agreed that Polanski should not be charged. I was shocked and so was Hannity.

Does being an 'artist' trump being a rapist?" asks Melissa Silverstein of Women & Hollywood.

Sure thing, Melissa. I've always considered myself an artist. In my youth I was good at drawing, painting and sculpting. After a number of years of carpentry I became rather talented in the use of hammers, pry bars and power tools.
Where do you live?
