Surf’s up. Mahalo
I live close to the beach at 7 foot elevation on Maui. There is a siren close to where I live. I hope it warns me in time to get my gallon of Paisano and head to higher ground.
Where’s the president? Are the FEMA trailers in place, what’s the government doing to help the poor who might be impacted by this?
which shore is facing samoa? Is that south/southeast?
Sea level observations indicate a tsunami was generated which may have been destructive along coasts in the source region. A damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts although some of these areas may experience non-damaging sea level changes.
A tsunami has been observed at the following sites:
Location Lat. Lon. Time Amplitude ———————————— -—— ——— -——— -—————
Apia West Samoa 13.8S 171.8W 1832UTC 0.70M/2.3ft
Pago Pago Amer. Samoa 14.3S 170.7W 1825UTC 1.57M/5.1ft
Time - Time of measurement.
Amp. - Tsunami amplitudes are measured relative to normal sea level. It is NOT crest-to-trough wave height. Values are given in both meters (M) and feet (FT).
At 10:48 AM Pacific Daylight Time on September 29, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 8.3 occurred in the Samoa Islands region. (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.)
To: U.S. West Coast, Alaska, and British Columbia coastal regions
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center
Subject: Tsunami Information Statement #2 issued 09/29/2009 at 11:59AM PDT
A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii will issue messages for Hawaii and other areas of the Pacific outside California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska.
This will be the final statement issued for this event by the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center unless conditions warrant. See the WCATWC web site for basic tsunami information, safety rules, and a tsunami travel time map and table.
This is scary. We were stationed at Pearl Harbor Sub Base. Whenever we had high surf warnings, some dumb tourist would have to prove how brave he/she was and go watch, too close. The next thing you hear, they’re washed out to sea. You have to respect the ocean, it’s unpredictable even when there are no warnings out.
Surf's up, Annette.
holy krakatoa!
Just spoke to my wife in Apia Capital of Samoa, she and 3 kids are fine but were terrified when the house shook violently for nearly 5 mins, paintings fell from walls, louvres popped from windows, the main door that was locked popped open. Severe after shocks. Local radio reporting that water levels have dropped around the coast, indicating maybe a wave will arrive soon. Most people have left the coast and moved to higher ground
Surf’s Up!
