Wrong on two counts. Only handguns are illegal. When they are used in self defense or defense of another generally the cops/courts look the other way after confiscating the handgun. Still not fair but there is a smidge of realism among the police.
If someone defended him with a gun why would that person have to stay around?
Any white person in that area would have been attacked and killed even more violently than this poor guy.
