In the video, the photographer can be heard talking in some form of excitement as if he were taping some racy wet T-shirt contest.
If you watch bystanders and listen to the crowd, it seems like a normal everyday event. With the mob going, I don’t see how anyone could have intervened without having to shoot at least one person. The riot could have escalated.
This is a tragedy for sure. But based on the crowd, the sounds and the cavelier spirit, it seems like this wasn’t much of a shock to those that were involved or watching it happen. THAT is the truly horrifying part.

The only good thing I saw on this video is that the girls stepped out to help him. It was too late, obviously, but in my day, the girls more typically were part of the violence or cheering it on. There was considerable black on white aggression among the girls, which I personally experienced. Whether the action by the girls on this video is a cultural change or just reflects this particular setting, I don't know. I was surprised to see it. Since I was mostly experiencing black on white aggression, it may be that it was just a different phenomenon.
Back in my school days, I can't remember white youngsters ever standing up to the violence or defending an attacked classmate. In our community, the white kids just weren't streetwise, and tended to react in shock or fear. They were taught not to fight in school, and for the most part, they didn't fight or defend one another, even when attacked. It always seemed to me that the minority kids had a sense of group identity while the white kids tended to view one another more as individuals. When it came to violent clashes, there was no group response to attacks by minority youths on the others. I hadn't thought about it for years, but this video brought it all back - only the crashing sound of breaking glass is missing. It's very very sad.
They remind me of the evil freaks that beheaded Daniel Pearl.
