Despite a torrent of criticism from the media, Democrats and even some in her own party, Sarah Palin remains the hottest brand name in politics.
Her recent resignation was perplexing. Its raised doubts about her viability as a potential presidential candidate. Still, she remains extremely popular with the GOP grass roots, and most Republican Party leaders would jump at the chance to have her headline one of their events.
Thats the picture that emerges from interviews with dozens of GOP state and local leaders from across the country.
As part of an effort to gauge Palins popularity with the rank and file beyond the Beltway, where the GOP establishment is lukewarm toward the charismatic former governor, POLITICO surveyed nearly 50 prominent Republican Party officials and politicians, representing every region of the country and ranging from statewide-elected officeholders to state legislators to state and county party chairs.
Some refused to talk about her at all. Others, mostly her critics, would do so only off the record. But taken as a whole, the body of interviews revealed that despite Palins high negative ratings in recent national polls, Republicans at the grass-roots level and their leaders still hold a very favorable impression of the former Alaska governor.
Westerners have a particular affinity for Palin, with many noting that she embodied the values of freedom and self-reliance.
Scott Sales, the minority leader of the Montana House, referred to her curb appeal among the partys rank and file.
In Colorado, a state where Palin campaigned hard last year on behalf of the Republican ticket but which Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) eventually lost to Barack Obama, Arapahoe County Republican Party Chairman David Kerber said that Palin was a good fit with Western sensibilities.

Go Sarah, go! Keep them guessing what you’re doing next, the liberals heads will be spinning with this book.
And clearly too many of the GOP insiders are somehow smitten with Romney. There’s a disconnect in the party that may only be addressed at the polls.
Well of course, she’s like a warm breeze on ascension to the top of a mountain.
I suppose the author is comparing her to someone like Ronald Reagan. Surely, he's not comparing her to the currently AWOL President.
I very much liked her Hong Kong speech. Didn’t care for her RNC speech as it was all about people (McCain, Obama) and not enough about ideas. (though in her role as vp candidate her hands were probably tied a bit)
I can see her political ascendancy from my house.
Seems the COUNTRY CLUB RINO GOP’s Love Romney.. but after his ROMNEY CARE (MASS version of BAUCUS CARE) makes Mitt a NON STARTER.
What the GOP fails to realize, if not for the energy brought by PALIN.. MANY (like myself) would have just stayed home, or gone FISHING.
You mean one has to hold office right up until the time that you are elected to another? Who made up these rules?
where you find this photoshopped mess.. those are HILLARY’s LEGS... they make me wanna barf no matter who they’re attached to.
Palin...maybe. I’m wary.
Paul...sure, but he’s not running.
Gary Johnson...yep.
Tom McClintock...YES!!!!!!!!!!!
Jim DeMint...yep.
Romney, McCain, Giuliani, Huckabee, Crist, Pawlenty, Steele, Graham, Kirk, and any other establishment RINO that dares to rear its ugly head in public...f*($%@ no.
I don’t know what is the “GOP Base” anymore but the conservative base sure does love her, you betcha!
This lady has even caused eyeglasses to become stylish and in vogue! It’s great. Have you noticed how the sytles have changed to a “Palin look” in glasses? Amazing. Even Libs try to look like her (those that need glasses), it’s hilarious.
I’d like to see Duncan Hunter up there. I think Palin and he would make a great team
This is really a thinly-disguised Romney puff piece...
Not sure about Palin, but I would consider voting for Hunter even though we wouldn’t agree on quite a few things.
