I seem to recall a flap back in the 80s where Reagan was castigated for saying trees caused pollution, except that he was right because trees naturally emit terpenes.

And when Canada was blaming the US for “acid rain” that was killing their lakes, a researcher proved that the accumulation of pine needles was at fault.

You never heard the MSM retract, but “acid rain” stories died out almost overnight.

Who wrote the following doggerel?

I think that I shall never see
An air polluter like a tree —
A tree whose toxic fumes accost
More atmosphere than car exhaust;
And yet there will be fools like me
Who say that God can make a tree.

I came here to say just that. I remember it too.

Isoprenes include terpenes; yes, he was laughed at; a study done 20 years ago by a Georgia university came to similar conclusions but couldn’t move to the epoxide, HO conclusion due to instrument limitation; all we currently know still suffers from instrument uncertainties along with coverage of observation.

None of this would be a problem at all if there were no humans to see it.

Kind of like waking from a dream where you’re careering downhill and your foot won’t reach the brake...

In the early 90’s I was involved in a industrial site clean-up in Messina, NY, the Owner wanted a site study done to identify any potential environmental problems. The study came back pointing out that the VOC (volatile organic compounds) releases would exceed EPA planned limits, the Owner wanted to know how these releases could be eliminated, and demanded by the local Envirocrazies and Chicken Littles, the answer was cut down the trees on the property, they were the source, because it was an “industrial site” the source did not matter. A meeting with the NY State DEP ended the nonsense.
