Several years ago a school in my county decided they wanted to do this. The parents said NO and that if the school board voted for it, they would pull their kids out. This was in a minority school district. By the time this was suggested, all the white kids had left for private schools, as well as the middle-class black kids. The school superintendant, whose idea this was, retired early.

It’s hard to get people to do something they really don’t want to do. The powers that be can use coercive methods, but it will be like pulling hens’ teeth with regard to real cooperation, and it will eventually fail, one way or another.

I’m going to be the poop in the punchbowl here-but yes, we are going to need to go to all year school, the sooner the better.

The Gnomestead has hosted some exchange students in the past. The kids, from Japan, Korea and Germany, all attended school year round and 4 out of 5 were light years ahead of their grade peers. Why we as a industrial country still cling stupidly to an agrarian school schedule speaks of an inertia we really can’t continue to follow.

Stop worrying about the indoctrination aspect and start worrying more about the indisputable facts regarding the rankings of American students. There are a lot of problems with the school system, this is only one of them, but it would be a start.
