Tina Benkiser will leave her post as chairwoman of the Texas Republican Party next month so she can join Gov. Rick Perrys campaign as a senior adviser.
In announcing her move, Benkiser called Perry the only true conservative in the race a clear shot at U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, who is challenging Perry for the Republican nomination.
While the move was unexpected, it makes sense that Benkiser would back Perry. She comes straight from the social conservative base that Perry is counting on to help him win another term.
Benkiser has led the state party since 2003. During that time, Republicans have maintained their hold on all statewide offices and, thanks to an unusually timed redrawing of districts in 2003, taken a majority of the states congressional seats. But the partys once-large majority in the Texas House has nearly evaporated, and Democrats have made gains in Harris and Dallas county offices.
Ping.
Freepmail me or ping me from the original thread to get on/off the 2010 Texas Governor's Race ping list.
I would love to see Sarah come to Texas to help campaign for Perry.
And KBH can't conceal her petty jealousy. Here's what she posted on her campaign website about Palin:
When it comes down to it, Palin doesnt know Eskimo from Alamo about Texas government and politics. Whats more, she is unlikely to care....
If Perry relies too heavily on Palin, he may find himself with a lot of time to watch Russians from her front porch come January 2011.
Agreed, and I bet she comes in during the last two weeks of the primary to hold a huge rally or two.
