VALLEY FALLS -- The young man was given three choices: get turned over to the police, go one-on-one in a fight with a seasoned war veteran, or be duct-taped to a flagpole for six hours with a sign around his neck identifying his alleged crime: flag burning.
It was the third option that would still have the small town buzzing a week after a 21-year-old was hunted down and forced to endure a public humiliation with its roots dating to the Middle Ages. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1938 were incensed enough to tie up the man last Sunday after they accused him of setting the flag in front of their building on fire.
Post Commander Nick Normile, a Vietnam War veteran, said the man came into the post's bar Sept. 18 on Poplar Avenue and was eventually turned away for not having a proper ID.
Apparently angered, the young man, who Normile did not want to name, cut the rope of the American flag flying overhead and used a cigarette lighter to set it on fire, Normile and others said.
The man sat pilloried as the village had its fall youth soccer picnic with a long parade of children passing in front of him.
"He'll never disrespect the flag again, I can tell you that," Normile said.

So why didn't he chose being turned into the police?
I'll tell you why, because he was given an opportunity to take the easy way out.
Small community, as I grew up in. They gave him the kindest way out, he took it.
I saw a video of unserviceable U.S. flags being destroyed in a discreet location away from public view.
The flags were not being burned, but rather cremated.
Get lost.
Until I was introduced to Democrat Party politics I believed in the rule of law.
Once I was educated, I learned that the law is only to benefit the Democrats.
The Democrat Party has corrupted the legal field or profession.
They, The Democrat Party , corrupted the political process long ago.
The Democrat Party corrupted the educational profession and system.
The Democrat Party is now working on corrupting the medical profession.
The Clinton regime and Ted Kennedy taught me all I know about the rule of law.
It isn’t the price of the flag nor where it is made that is the discussion.
It is the principle of someone burning the flag, which belonged to the people who got involved.
Sorry you don’t see the difference.
Why?
Out of Court settlement.
I think I’m going to go out and practice with my throwing axe.
The cop just chogied down the road, working on the see no evil principle I guess.
When we FReeped ANSWER in Houston in 2003, we arrived early with our flags, signs and "We Support Our Troops" banner. The police greeted us with a friendly, "We're mighty glad to see you folks here." They then proceeded to set us up in a location where the hippie-scum had to march right past us. An officer stood between us and them and admonished anyone who tried to approach us in a hostile manner. (Oh, and there were some who did.)
A couple of our guys went over to the parking lot near the park before the march began and wrote down license plate numbers of any vehicles sporting "No Blood for Oil" or that kind of nonsense that had expired inspection or registration stickers and gave it to one of the police officers.
The officer took it, smiled and said, "Why thank you," and headed right over to that parking lot.
(Pinging Flyer, Dix and Texas Cowboy in memoriam.)
actually you are not getting it...where the flag was made or what it cost is irrelevant.
what it stands for is....and a little public humiliation is a long way from a lynching which is where I bet the sensitive here will take this..lol
I have gotten into fistfights over words and shucks words don't hurt right.
Melas, don't try to defend that. You have publicly admitted here you fight a bit too
“Pointless and stupid.”
I know people who use that law firm.
It was a personal assault, he burned the flag in spite
not for a political statement, he’s quite lucky to
not have it on his record.
Our society has become corrupt because we lack the will to enforce civility.
A well-timed ass-kicking to a deserving party is the mortar to the foundation of a civilized society.
Gee... what nice, respectable people...
You sure are high and mighty and think of yourself as superior
when freepers start on all that “you people” sort of talk they soon become gone
let me be the first to tell you goodbye.
So are you, Mr. McCain.
The only despicable thing here are people thinking he had some right to destroy private property.
