Mao's grandson becomes youngest major-general in Chinese army

(afp) Mao Xinyu Chairman Mao’s grandson may be the very model of a modern major-general; possibly the youngest in all of the People’s Liberation Army.

Speaking recently in his capacity as a researcher at the Academy of Military Sciences, and as an expert in Mao Zedong Thought, Mao Xinyu was introduced as a major-general. It was the first signal that the only known surviving heir in the male line from the Great Helmsman may have been promoted from senior colonel. His elevation, reportedly in June, makes the scion of the Mao family the youngest major-general in the 2.5-million-strong PLA. He is 39.

The only child of the late Chairman’s second son, Mao Anqing, the younger Mao studied history at People’s University in Beijing before he was spotted in the late 1980s working as a student waiter at the newly opened Shangri-La hotel. He later entered the army, following in the footsteps of his mother, who also reached the rank of major-general.

I hope he gets along well with a son of Liu Shaoqi. Liu's son is a 4-star general of PLA. Liu and Mao were mortal political enemies, and Mao got Liu killed during Cultural Revolution.

I wonder who is looking out for this guy and why.

This guy is a Mjor General in the PLA? He looks like a poster boy for “Big Boy Burgers”. He definitely needs to put a padlock on the Frig. and get on the treadmill.

I have spent time in China. I'm pretty certain I could count on one hand the number of fat people I saw; they are rare. (The food might take a while to get used to, but it's not that there isn't plenty to eat.)

And as an aside, I took this picture at the Beijing night market - sort of a carnival without the rides - and it serves to remind me of the warm, genuine, and gracious welcome I received from virtually every person I met.

Surprisingly this man and his wife escaped the “one child policy” and have a son and a daughter.

I was amazed at the very vast array of anything that is readily available along with how much every small vendor tries to please and make the sale.
Please quibble.
But mostly Hello.
