I find this story a little odd.

First it states:

Undercover agents posing as members of an al-Qaida sleeper cell were introduced to him

Then:

The agents meeting with Smadi said they tried to discourage him from violence on several occasions, the release states.

Why would members of an al-Qaida sleeper cell attempt to talk this "terrorist" out of using violence?

To demonstrate later in court, that they *did not* encourage him to do something that he actually did not want to do, avoiding an entrapment defense. Fine work on their part. Now they can prove that the act was completely his desire.
