Brazil Demands Zelaya Be Restored, as the Ousted President, Holed Up in Embassy, Declines Direct Talks With Government

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras -- Ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya hunkered down in the Brazilian Embassy here on Wednesday for what could be a long standoff with the interim government, while roving bands of his supporters set up roadblocks around the capital, smashed windows, and engaged in sporadic battles with police and army troops.

The interim government, which forced Mr. Zelaya into exile on June 28, briefly lifted a curfew that had been in place since shortly after he resurfaced Monday, having sneaked into the country and turned up unannounced at the Brazilian Embassy. Residents ventured outside to stock up on food and water before the curfew began again Wednesday evening.

Interim President Roberto Micheletti had ordered the curfew and shut Honduras's airports until further notice. The moves appeared to have stymied Mr. Zelaya's attempt to rally demonstrators around the Brazilian Embassy and form a mob that could carry him to the presidency.

But the president's moves have been tough on Honduras, one of Latin America's poorest countries. Food deliveries to the capital have largely stopped. Hondurans traveling outside Tegucigalpa were stranded where they were at the time of the curfew. Near the Guatemalan border, dozens of tractor-trailers were parked on the side of the road before military checkpoints, their drivers sitting under them reading newspapers.

In New York, where world leaders have gathered for the United Nations General Assembly, Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva demanded that Mr. Zelaya be restored to power immediately. Brazil has asked the Security Council to take up the issue of Honduras.

Mr. da Silva called for the international community to ensure the protection of the Brazilian Embassy, which has been cordoned off by hundreds of Honduran police..

The current government is the constitutional government of Honduras...not the interim government. Zelaya is a traitor who wanted to defy the Honduran constitution and set up a marxist state. He deserves a tritors fate.

Absolutely, and I don’t understand why they turned the power and water back on to the Brazilian Embassy as long as Zelaya is there.

The rioters and protesters don't believe in a nation of law. They should be deported to Brazil.

Exactly, Honduras should tell Brazil to take a hike.

If we had a real and honest man as President instead of the leftist dictator-loving TOTUS, we’d be on the right side of this and the matter would be resolved properly by now...

Exactly...I doubt there would have been much controversy in the first place.

In trying to figure out why our government would support an effort to subvert the constitutional process in Honduras, we might consider the potential, however small, that evidence might surface showing that President Obama is not a natural born citizen as required by our constitution. If it can be established that demonstrations and external support can defeat the constitutional process in Honduras, it would make it more likely that the same thing could work here.

1. So much for OAS rules of non-interference.
2. HonCitizen mentioned elsewhere that he was following up a local Honduran story that Brazil was offered a permanent seat on the UN Security Council provided they bring home the bacon by getting Zelaya reinstated. If true, isn’t it a criminal conspiracy?
3. Another pillar of the OAS Charter is upholding rule of law. Not ONCE have those stating Zeleya should be returned to office supported their position by logical argument taking issue with Honduran congressional process or Honduran supreme court ruling, IIRC. Instead, they have relied on deceptive, if not duplicitous, media reporting and thuggery. All countries, especially those in Central and Latin America with citizenry who actually desire freedom and self-autonomy [not totalitarian dictatorships a la Chavez] should take note and speak up.

Of great concern is food stores: hunger is a powerful weapon. Unbelievable that peaceful Hondurans may face such hardship for the ‘crime’ of supporting their constitution and those who have followed it faithfully and to the letter.

Yep. Think he’s looking for precedent.

Even Chavez’s abrogation of the constitution was hailed by lefties as the ‘democratic’ process at work.

The left stands for totalitarian ‘democracy’. Totally totalitarian, Democracy in name only.

My prayers are with my brothers and sisters of the Honduran Military and I hope they flush Zelaya out.
