Mark down the week of September 20, 2009 as the period when global warming skepticism kicked into high gear. Yes, there had been a lot of skepticism earlier but this was the week when doubt about the "inevitability" of global warming broke into the mainstream media in a significant way.
In the not so humble opinion of your humble correspondent it began last Sunday when I took the American MSM to task here in NewsBusters for failing to report on the observation by a noted climatologist, Professor Mojib Latif, of Germany's Leibniz Institute, that the planet is in for a cooling period that could last from 10 to 20 years. The very next day, by an amazing "coincidence," the findings of Professor Latif were reported by Andrew Revkin of the New York Times. Although Revkin couldn't quite bring himself to renounce the global warming faith in which he invested a couple of decades of his life, the mere mention of Latif's findings caused him to be charged with heresy from the usual leftwing suspects including the Daily Kos. Here are a couple of examples of Kossack invective hurled at Revkin for daring to question in even a small way the sacred global warming dogma:

>>> Many of the GW proponents are motivated by cold hard CASH. <<<<
No exaggeration, I was told this more than 20 years ago by an acquaintance doing graduate work in (one of the physical sciences?) at Boston University.
We got into a discussion about GW and he laughed and said the only sure way to get grants in his specialty was to frame the proposed research in terms of GW.
It is a sad state of our scientific community, but it is true. Scientists are skewing data and making absurd claims so they get large research dollars. No one can look at the facts and be convinced that any of the global warming alarmist crap is anywhere near the truth.
People who only read the NYT only must be so disoriented. Finding out that there’s been no global warming for 10 YEARS!!! After being told JUST THE OPPOSITE for that same 10 years. And finding out about the Jones controversy only after the guy resigns(fired). And hearing that not everyone loves ACORN only after the census bureau fires them. Their heads must be spinning.
Thanks for the ping.
In Lomborg's books, he doesn't deny that global warming may be happening...he believes it is. His argument is that the cost of Kyoto would do virtually nothing to stop the presumed warming. He argues that there are many more worthwhile places that we could spend our money...if we were truly invested in the idea of bettering mankind.
Interestingly, one of the arguments he uses is the fact that more people die of cold and cold-related illness than die from heat and heat-related illness. So, stopping global warming would actually kill more people than it would save.
Read his Cool It. I hope he gets some air time in Copenhagen.
I always like Sam Kinison's argument against food-aid to Africa. He said we shouldn't be sending them food; we should be sending suitcases. Send all the food we want, but they'll still be living in a place without food and water. We've got deserts in America, but we're smart enough not to live in 'em.
hey, it’s gonna be tough selling that newspaper bailout if we’re all burning our bedposts to stay warm...
Yes, thanks!!!
