In a little noticed development last week, Defense Secretary Robert Gates ordered 2,500 to 3,000 more troops to Afghanistan as soon as possible to meet imminent threats from roadside bombs.
Gates was responding to a request from the overall U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, for more bomb disposal and route clearance teams, medical rescue units and intelligence specialists. All are needed to combat the rising use of roadside bombs, the No. 1 troop killer in Afghanistan.
Which troops are getting those assignments remained unclear Monday. But as military officials and the Obama administration debate the next steps in the fight for Afghanistan, more local Marines and sailors are preparing to be sent to the front lines.
Maj. Eric Dent, at Marine Corps headquarters at the Pentagon, said it is unclear if more Marines will get the call to join the more than 11,000 leathernecks already in Afghanistan.
"We still don't know if the Marine Corps is going to get tasked with this or not," Dent said.

Trying to fight a war of large consequence, facing financial collapse at the same time, while ‘funadmentally’ changing the entire operating system of the USs Constitutional framework as a goal, and, planning two major unaffordable (health, climate) initiatives in the Congress with no means of funding other than borrowing money for execution, is....TOO MUCH to handle for one with a background in community organizing, much less for any possible experienced professional with a long track record of success in all things to deal with successfully! Thinking on oneself as Alexander the Great is not the same as BEING Alexander the Great. Going downhill in a heavily loaded truck with no brakes, and, with a blind driver, with no previous documentable license, listening to his favorite political tunes, is not the way to go. Maybe 2000-3000 troops are not worthy of thought!? Could that be the reason for delay and confusion? Maybe it is UN too much on the mind.
He’s too busy worrying how to fend off Orly Taitz and Larry Sinclair.
Who’s the “War Czar”, let him decide.....probably Rev. Wright of Bill Ayers.
If there is one death, the charge is murder.
Just thinkin'
We thought our civilian commanders were complete idiots , that did not have the least notion of what it took to win the war John McCain Faith of my Fathers ‘
“So far this year, 211 members of the U.S. military have died in Afghanistan compared with 155 total U.S. deaths in all of 2008, a figure that was the highest annual death toll since the war began in fall 2001.”
I can’t stand it.
And now Johnny Mac is one OF them. Fancy that.
a) that Obama is deliberately trying to lose in Afghanistan?
b) that he only wants a "draw" so we can have "retreat with honor" (kind of the same thing)?
c) that he wants to win, but only after health care passes?
d) or that he is so befuddled he doesn't know what the hell he is doing?
Honestly, I can't tell anymore.
Some things never change in the Corps. “Hurry up and wait” is one.
