It didnt take long for former George W. Bush speechwriter Matt Latimer to be branded as a back-stabbing nobody someone who slipped inside the White House just long enough to overhear some embarrassing snippets and spill them for a book contract.
After GQ magazine ran excerpts of his new book Speech-less: Tales of a White House Survivor, Latimer found himself a target of both the right and the left for telling tales out of school. Among the tidbits that drew attention were his claims that then-Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson did not fully understand the bailout plan and that President Bush didnt remember meeting Sarah Palin.
In an interview with POLITICO before his books release Tuesday, Latimer responded to the criticism by borrowing a page from the health care debate: Read the book...continue
SNIP:
-:The gravitational pull of this city is against ideas and values. Its toward middle-of-the-road or tactical things, like getting 51 percent of the vote, he said. I saw so many people saying they believe in certain values, and then they come to Washington and forget.
-"My disillusion with the president came when I had been asked to write an address for CPAC, he said. In the exchange, which is included in the GQ excerpts, the president questioned and belittled the importance of the conservative movement. I was disappointed, said Latimer. I thought, Wait a minute. Isnt that what we were here for? He wasnt a conservative like that.
-"Supporting Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), for instance, was out of the question. As he saw it, McCain was the epitome of a politician who compromised away everything. Thats how he became the maverick signing on to every Democratic bill there was, he said, adding that he asked a friend why he was alone in opposing the nominee: How come everyone is on board? Everyone just changed their positions?
That's the absolute truth!!! And he was a part of an administration that was as guilty of this as any and more than most. Can't fault him for saying so.
I agree. The last administration set us up for this WACKO that we’re fighting right now.
It should be a great read. I think I’m going to pick it up.
Another tell all book.
Whoop-de-do!
Another conservative who feels betrayed by Dubya. Stop the presses. film at eleven!
I read his article in the Wash Post over the weekend, and had several thoughts, the first of which was I hope his book makes some money because no one will ever hire him again for fear of his kiss-and-tell ways. Also, whatever you say about Bush, he is loyal, and this guy is anything but. In fact, I think this guy wrote his book spitting on his former employer to position himself to serve as a paid guest on the likes of MSNBC.
We need to be able to criticize. Yes, even our own supposedly “conservative” leaders. If we can’t even criticize them in those areas where they have failed us, then all you are doing is abetting and allowing the next one to promise us what we want to hear and do otherwise.
If we can’t hold them accountable...who will??
No room in your world for loyalty and gratitude. Only gratitude for snot-noses passing judgment on their elders and betters. How do you proposed holding Bush accountable? I guess you never heard of the 11th commandment.
Sorry Lydia, my only unconditionaly “loyalty” is to God and family, not politicians. I hate to be so blunt with you, but it is this type of “loyalty” - to an “individual” over principles - that I detest and consider very dangerous. I will continue to speak out against those decisions/areas that I find are not correct, I don’t care who the ‘individual’ is. It could be BUSH, OBAMA, PALIN, CLINTON, if I believe that their actions or decisions are not in the best interest of our country, then I will say so.
