WASHINGTON Former Miss California Carrie Prejean told a crowd of social conservatives Friday that she was a varsity jock in high school who got into beauty pageants just knowing that she is a strong woman with values.
Her strength has carried her through the junk that followed after she responded during the Miss USA pageant that she believes marriage is between a man and a woman, she said.
There was something wrong with turning on the TV and seeing people mock me for my faith. For seeing people make fun of me for the answer I gave. Making fun of me for being a Christian, said Prejean at the Values Voter Summit Friday. It didnt make sense to me.
Prejean, now 22 years old and a senior at San Diego Christian College, was in the final round of the Miss USA 2009 when openly gay pageant judge Perez Hilton asked her if she believed every U.S. state should legalize same-sex marriage.
She responded that every American can choose what to think on the issue, but in her family they believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. The pageant finalist added, no offense to anybody out there. But thats how I was raised and I believe that it should be between a man and a woman.
A storm of protest and verbal abuse from the pro-gay marriage camp against Prejean immediately ensued the pageant.
Though Prejean was named first runner up in the Miss USA 2009 pageant, she was later dethroned as Miss California, with producers of the pageant citing alleged breach of contract. She has denied the claims, and has filed a libel suit maintaining she has been discriminated against for her religious views.
I have never seen anything like it, Prejean said, being a 22-year-old college student not really into politics, or I wasnt at the time. But now I have a new outlook. I am disgusted at the way some people can be so intolerant.
She said not only has she been attacked, but her mother has been tabloid fodder while her father and 90-year-old grandmother have also been regularly attacked.
But you know what, I am here today because I am still standing and I am not defeated, said a defiant Prejean, who some call the new family values spokeswoman. They have not defeated me.
The 22-year-old, who got the crowd more excited than established politicians featured earlier Friday morning, shared that she was raised by parents who taught her to fear God and show respect to everyone even if they have different views from her. In high school, she described herself as a jock who played four sports, including varsity basketball.
She started entering pageants her senior year of high school when a friend suggested the idea. Her mother had been hesitant about the idea, but she recalled assuring her mother that it was a competition and I love competition [and] I love to win and that she didnt need to wear a bathing suit.
Her success in pageants brought her to the final round of the Miss USA competition, where on that fateful night she chose to give up her chances of being Miss USA and competing in Miss Universe to stand up for her values.
Im not a hater of anyone. This is not about me being a bigot, a racist, or whatever you want to call me, Prejean said. It is just that I am a woman who stood up for the truth and people dont want to admit that.
She added, "Even though I didnt win the crown that night, I know the Lord has so much of a bigger crown in heaven for me.
Her book about her experience with the Miss USA pageant, entitled Still Standing, is set to be released in November.
Here ya go ... Eye wash
1 Cor 3:16 is supporting of 1 Cor 6:19-20. But neither of them do more that state we are to treat are bodies properly as a temple of the Holy Spirit that God has given to live in us through Christ. Without a clear mandate that a thing is wrong I contend that we have liberty as described by Paul.
Agree completely. But it offers no support at all to what you have contended. How exactly do you know that she doesn’t fear the Lord? Instead of accusing her of inappropriate actions perhaps you should be praising her. It is so according to this proverb as far as you know.
I still think this is all about your own self created moral box that you claim is scriptural. If it was disrespectful (and I do not think it was) it was not disrespectful to you unless you are God. So far your posts have suggested that you seem to think you have license to judge in His stead.
Ron, lets see, Carrie gives up her chance to win miss calif and possibly miss universe, all because she wants to stand up for her Christian belief’s. and you think that her âcharacter and values are negatedâ because of a boob job.....glad you were not a judge
You response that got yanked was not out of anger? If you cannot even be truthful with yourself I doubt I can trust very much of anything you say.
I'm confused...how can you say you agree but contend that I offer no support?
If she fears the Lord, why does she offer her body in temptation? Cleopatra, Delilah comes to mind.
My original argument was that she should not hold up a certain value system when she violates the other tenants from the same book, it's an obvious hypocrisy and I cannot in good conscious get behind her.
I had a response that was yanked, where?
You have no idea what I know or do not know about scripture.
As for what you know, It almost sounds as if you believe burkas would be a good idea. Then no men would be tempted by a womans body. I am really getting the impression that you are projecting your own guilt over unresolved lust. As christians the responsibility is ours to control our eyes and control our minds. We have the power of Christ through the Holy Spirit to do so, but it is easy to ignore that power and obey our flesh. None of that means we have a right to remove anothers freedom under God or the constitution in order to make self control easier.
Incidentally, I would be grateful if you would reference what scripture you are referring to in yet another of your "this is what scripture says" statements. So far in all of your posts I have seen one scripture reference, and it supported nothing you have stated.
As a conservative, personally, I found her speech to be rather low voltage.
So, you support the 1st Amendment but not the 2nd and say you support the Constitution?
All or nothing, FRiend
End of conversation.
As long as your at it, Comment #22 could stand some removing.
You claim to want discussion, and I had thought so, but I think now that I was wrong. You do not seem to want anything more than to be annoying.
No more pearls for you.
I've stated that I'm not here to educate anyone, just gave you a reference to start with and have distanced myself from you with your women in burkas comment.
Have a good evening and good bye.
good lord....breast augmentation has nothing to do with Christianity
excellent post as usual..I am becoming very fond of your point of view
..not in a gay way..lol
really...talk about offensive posts..lol
Thanks - As Mark Twain said, “A discriminating irreverence is the creator and protector of human liberty.”
Lastly, you need not state that you are not here to educate anyone. We know.
