In a stunning request, the Obama administration has made it clear to poll-challenged Gov. Paterson that the White House would prefer he not seek election to a full four-year term next year.
The Obama administration sent the message through White House political affairs director Patrick Gaspard, who met with the governor at his campaign headquarters for nearly two hours last Monday, according to a source with knowledge of the conversation.
"They expressed concern about his chances about being reelected and the likelihood his presence in the race made it more likely that Rudy Giuliani would enter the contest," the source said. "The preference is that he not run. That message was conveyed directly."
The bombshell meeting between Paterson and Gaspard occurred the same day President Obama was in New York City to deliver a Wall Street address - a speech Paterson was not invited to, according to several sources.

The Obama’s, yes both, along with Jesse Jackson Jr. and others, are named in the Rod Blagovich senate seat scandal...I said then, Rod was the white fall guy....The longer it goes, the more I know I am right.
Even when Bubba knew that Dinkins was toast for NYC Mayor he came to NY and campaigned for and with him.
This is a disgustingly opportunistic thing to do and will no doubt cause a backlash.
This is part of Obama’s plan to shove Andrew Cuomo into the campaign. Don’t forget, Cuomo ran HUD. He’s got ACORN connections.
If Paterson has an ounce of dignity left, he’ll tell Obama to shove off.
In the end, NY will get Rudy as governor.
This is obviously not a leak of a confidential discussion. This is an announcement, from Obama himself.
And, speaking of racism, it is a predictable effort to portray Giuliani as the racist, as they continually did the last time he ran. It's all Giuliani's fault.
Finally, speaking of a blind black man, we might recall Obama's two Special Olympics jokes during the campaign last fall--although the press managed to bury one of them (the joke about waterheads).
