I think there are accreditation issues that come into play if you put your courses out there for credit. I have to say, I’ve had a few online courses, and they are not as good as in person courses. I don’t like them. They are cold and impersonal. You don’t meet anyone. You don’t build a network. You don’t have people to study with. You don’t get the teacher’s non-verbal communication, or at least not much of it.

“FUnny how nobody with a degree ever claims that. Most of us know that we COULD get such an education, but we WOULDN’T unless we had actual TEACHERS and they cost money.”

I’d much have preferred to do my entire degree that way, I would have finished much more quickly. Teachers are great, but if you are already familiar with the material, why can’t I just proceed to the examination, take the credit and move on to the next step?

Here is India’s version of this.
It’s really pretty good, all in Engrish.

Yes, there are accreditation problems, but that is simply politics nothing more. I had to struggle for a year to get all my credentials recognised, (I transferred twice, had HS credits), at the institution from which I eventually graduated.

Online courses aren’t for everyone, but as a deaf student, most lectures were useless in terms of learning. I couldn’t hear the prof, and having the notes online would have been a godsend back in the day.

Networking is an interesting question. I don’t see why an online class cannot set up a discussion board by which the students can interact.

Networking is a very good point.

It’s not that obscure, it’s from “Short Circuit” though my favorite line from that character (whose name escapes me) was the discussion of his ancestry.

“Where are you from?”
“Chicago”
“No, I mean, originally, your ancestors.”
“Oh, them... Pittsburgh.”

“I have taken all the Walter Lewin physics courses online and can say that he is a terrific teacher who simplifies an otherwise very complex subject.”

Probably true, but it won’t make up for all the high school and introductory university mathematics which I have long since largely forgotten. Oh, I’m sure I can still manage the basics of vector math and such, but caculus or advanced trig? Forget it. So I guess the first thing I’d have to take is a refresher in mathematics.
