The Iran Experiment
Wall Street Journal ^ | September 18, 2009 | Gerald Seib

Posted on 09/17/2009 9:45:13 PM PDT by La Lydia

The great Iran-engagement experiment is about to begin. If it doesn't succeed, it will be followed very shortly by more of the great Iran-sanctions experiment. That, in a nutshell, is what to expect in the next few weeks.. keep an eye on the sanctions part; the government's machinery already is moving on that front.

In fact, lists of possible moves already are being drawn up quietly. There will be an effort to get the Security Council to adopt sanctions beyond those already on the books, but Russia and China will pose problems. The more important action likely will be what the U.S. and its Western allies agree among themselves to do.

...the case for giving both diplomacy and sanctions time to work before hitting the Iran panic button has been bolstered by the recent conclusion of intelligence agencies that Iran's effort to develop long-range missiles that could carry a weapon isn't moving ahead very briskly. The most immediate impact of that finding was the Obama administration's decision, disclosed by the Journal on Thursday, to shelve a plan to build a missile-defense system based in Europe. But the conclusion also has implications for broader Iran strategy...

Yuval Steinitz, Israel's finance minister, met administration and congressional leaders, and his message about Iran was: "We feel the time is really running out now," Mr. Steinitz said in an interview....

Mr. Steinitz also suggested banning sales to Iran of technology and equipment necessary to keep its oil and gas fields producing smoothly. Iran also is highly dependent on imports of gasoline and other refined products, which is another area of vulnerability. More dramatically, Mr. Steinitz suggested that a blockade of Iranian oil exports ought to be on the table....

Guess Mr. Seib hasn't heard about Hugo Chavez' promise to send 20,000 barrels of gasoline to Iran each day beginning in October.

Forget about ‘experiments’ and ‘engagements’, the mad mullahs and their little sockpuppet Ahmadinnerbiscuit need to be thinking about the Israeli ‘deployment’ aimed right at their nuclear program.

And believe this: it’s already been thoroughly scoped out, located, and targeted. All that Netanyahu has to do is give the order.

I hope and pray that you are right. I trust Netanyahu more than I do my own government at this point.

Amen to that. It is highly possible that 0bama is to Israel what Antiochus IV Epiphanes was to their ancestors in 167 BC.

Yes, sanctions in the form of “incentive packages”. Ach and the mullahs must be rolling on the floor.

Nobody is remotely serious. This farce is just pathetic. Nothing will be done, Iran will win as usual, and there will be hell to pay in consequence. And all anyone in the west cares about is being able to ignore it for another five minutes.
