For the first time anyone can remember, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi teared up at a press conference this morning in response to an off-beat question about the current state of political discourse.
Visibly struggling to retain her composure, Pelosi recalled a time in San Francisco when emotions ran out of control, obviously referring to the assassination of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk by an angry former supervisor Dan White on Nov. 27, 1978.
"We are a free country, and this balance between freedom and safety is one that we have to carefully balance," Pelosi began. Then out of nowhere, startling the reporters gathered at her weekly press conference, she almost instantly teared up as she recalled the unnamed events long ago in San Francisco.
"I saw this, myself, in the late '70s in San Francisco," she said. This kind of rhetoric was very frightening, and it created a climate in which violence took place."
Finally regaining control, she expressed a wish that "we would all, again, curb our enthusiasm in some of the statements that are made," and "take responsibility" for what they say, "because "the ears that it is falling on are not as balanced as the person making the statement might assume."
Pelosi's comments come after the House chastized Rep. Joe Wilson for shouting out, "You lie," during President Obama's address to Congress last week, part of an insurgent politics of anger that is gaining ground in public discourse.

Nancy Pelosi is deeply disturbed.
The botox has gone to her brain.
She can dish it out but does not like it when it is directed to her. Boo Hoo
awww how sad. Did Barry give her something to choke on?
There is no balance between Freedom and safety. Freedom outweighs ALL. We can take care of safety ourselves.
...she probably got word she’s on an ACORN tape....*grins*
“I saw this, myself, in the late ‘70s in San Francisco,”
The world has seen it too, Tiananmen Square.
We won’t go so easily Nancy.
The Weeper of the House.
In more ways than one.
Why the immense sympathy for a “gay” movement which would just as soon turn angry at a moment’s notice and throw Nancy under the bus for some insignificant gaffe?
Nanny has “issues”. Lots of “issues”. She needs to hang it up. She’s in over her head with all this “hopey changey” communist stuff.
Nanzi could end it all if she just KILLED THE BILL.
The “violence” she is witnessing is America’s reaction to the Democrat agenda.
The front half is probably hard as a dried bugger, the back half is like a gooey snot ball.
Maybe she should stop calling us teabaggers and call us Americans instead.
So many semi-pornographic quips, so little time.
“...an off-beat question about the current state of political discourse.”
Do not underestimate the press role here. If you ever have the nauseating experience of watching a dem news conference on C-span, it isn’t just soft ball questions.
The press encourages the dems to go as far as possible in villainizing the opposition. It usually reaches a point where the dem realizes they are being asked to say something really crazy and they politely deflect.
Pelosi isn’t smart enough to do that, she believes her own left wing press.
Snif, snif, I remember my little dog, Petey....he got hit by a car one day....(cue sad violin music)
See, we all can make up sob stories.
