With missile move, Obama hands Russia a gift
Reuters Analysis ^ | September 17, 2009 | Steve Holland

President Barack Obama essentially handed Russia a gift on Thursday with his decision to roll back a planned U.S. missile defense in eastern Europe. The Russian government had loudly protested U.S. plans begun by Obama's predecessor, Republican George W. Bush, to deploy an anti-missile system in eastern Europe that the United States insisted had been aimed at defending against a potential missile attack from Iran.

Obama's...move drew praise from fellow Democrats and some arms control advocates who saw the Bush plan as aimed at a Iranian missile threat that did not yet exist...

But Republicans and missile-defense advocates called the move misguided and short-sighted and said it could weaken U.S. and European security...

The president has been seeking Russian help in stiffening U.N. sanctions against Iran over a nuclear weapons program Tehran denies having, but so far Moscow has shown no signs of softening its resistance to more sanctions. The administration stressed that its decision was not based on any anticipated concession from Moscow. "This is not about Russia," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs...

John Bolton, a defense hawk who was Bush's U.N. ambassador, said Obama's decision showed "weakness and naivete. The Russians will pocket this concession and work for more."

There were also questions about U.S. relations with eastern Europe after a period in which the United States led efforts to expand NATO into countries that have looked to Washington to counter Russia's historic influence in the region.

"There will be a certain price to be paid here potentially because it will certainly cause some concerns with the central European allies," said Eric Edelman, who was undersecretary of defense for policy in the Bush administration.

How bad has it got to be if EVEN REUTERS notices it's a bad idea? How pathetically dumb and naive can they be?

Someone has made the calculated decision that no one will toss a missile towards Europe.

Obama OWNS it now.

Their foreign policy seems to be throw our allies under the bus and appease our enemies. I struggle to find civil ways of expressing my disgust with this bunch.

I read the comments from a couple of stories in UK newspapers this morning posted on this board. Nearly all were full of praise.
This doesn't surprise me that much. Obamathink is much the same as Eurothink. Both despise our freedoms.

Roles have now reversed and shifted immensely.

In the past: Reagan & Gorbachev

Now: Putin & Obama

Momentum has shifted ... to the Russians. Still a threat, maybe more so than Iran. I’m not sure.

The one slight, glimmer of light in the whole dark mess. HE OWNS IT. He owns every slithery, vile deed the Russians can come up with. He owns the Iranian nukes and missiles coming fiasco. He owns the fact that no country is going to want to cooperate with with the United States, and no country can trust us. Like the economy, it’s his now to answer for.

Ahhhhh! The Good Old Days!

Not in this year. Or the next four years. Maybe not the next eight years.

Well, we always have Statler Brothers songs and old John Wayne movies too.

They are just plain damn EVIL.

This was never about Russia’s security, only about its pride. The pipsqueak facility planned for Poland might make the rubble bounce a little less from a Russky attack on Europe, but that’s about all.

After 1938, the Czechs should know better than to take anyone’s word.

The Czech’s in the mail sir....

The whole world would do well to be cautioned that a Rat administration or congress is very likely to subject foreign policy to internal domestic politics.

If the Russians and Chicoms were smart, they’d launch now. Obammie the Commie would simply surrender.

Yep. Why do I keep thinking that this has been his plan all along? I am having flash-backs about that story going around during the election, which I hope was apocryphal....

Global Elite Picked Obama Long Before Voters:

Man recounts startling tale of first time he heard of Barack Obama—18 years ago in Russia...The bottom line of the tirade she started against the United States went something like this:...

"I think you are going to be surprised when you get a black president very soon,” she said. The consensus we expressed was that we didn’t think there was anything innately barring that. The right person at the right time and sure, America would try to vote for the right person, be he or she, black or not.

“What if I told you that you will have a black president very soon and he will be a communist?” she said. “Well, you will; and he will be a communist.”

One of us asked, “It sounds like you know something we don’t know.”

“Yes, it is true,” she replied. “This is not some idle talk. He is already born, and he is educated and being groomed to be president right now. You will be impressed to know that he has gone to the best schools of presidents. He is what you call ‘Ivy League.’ You don’t believe me, but he is real and I even know his name. His name is Barack. His mother is white and American and his father is black from Africa. That’s right, a chocolate baby! And he’s going to be president.”

She became more and more smug as she presented her stream of detailed knowledge and predictions so matter-of-factly—as though all were foregone conclusions.

“It’s all been thought out. His father is not an American black, so he won’t have that social slave stigma. He is intelligent and he is half white and has been raised from the cradle to be an atheist and a communist. He’s gone to the finest schools. He is being guided every step of the way and he will be irresistible to America.”

She was obviously happy that the communists were doing this and that it would somehow be a thumbing of their collective noses at America: They would give us a black president and he’d be a communist to boot. She made it obvious that she thought that this was going to breathe new life into world communism. She always asserted that communism was far from dead. She was full of details about him that she was eager to relate.

She rattled off a complete litany. He was from Hawaii. He went to school in California. He lived in Chicago. He was soon to be elected to the legislature. “Have no doubt: he is one of us, a Soviet.”p> Since I had dabbled in languages, I knew a smattering of Arabic. I commented: “If I remember correctly, ‘Barack’ comes from the Arabic word for ‘blessing.’ " “Yes. It is ‘African,’’’ she insisted, “and he will be a blessing for world communism. We will regain our strength and become the No. 1 power in the world.”

She said something to the effect that America was at the same time the great hope and the great obstacle for communism. America would have to be converted to communism, and Barack was going to pave the way.

So, what does this conversation from 1992 prove? Well, it’s definitely anecdotal. It doesn’t prove that Obama has had Soviet communist training nor that he was groomed to be the first black American president, but it does show one thing that I think is important. It shows that Soviet Russian communists knew of Barack from a very early date. It also shows that they truly believed among themselves that he was raised and groomed communist to pave the way for their future. ...
