Seizing on an issue that has been trumpeted by conservative media, Republican congressional leaders have launched an all-out campaign to choke off any federal dollars from going to ACORN, the scandal-plagued anti-poverty group.
After the Senate voted on Monday to bar any new federal money for ACORN the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now from the Departments of Transportation and Housing and Urban Development, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and other top Republicans began pressing President Barack Obama to use his executive authority to extend the ban to all federal agencies.
"It is evident that ACORN is incapable of using federal funds in a manner that is consistent with the law," Boehner and the other Republicans told the president. "Simply put, ACORN should not receive another penny of American taxpayers' money."
One ACORN insider estimated that the group, and groups affiliated with it, receive $1.5 million to $2 million annually from the federal government, with the bulk of the groups' money coming from state and local governments.
A recent investigation by the office of Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) another vocal ACORN critic concluded that the organization had gotten at least $53 million from federal agencies since 1994. GOP aides said that total "does not count the untold millions more that ACORN has received indirectly through state and local agencies that receive federal block grants."
Brian Kettenring, an ACORN spokesman, said that the lion's share of the federal money went to the ACORN Housing Corp. for its work on first-time home buyer counseling and, more recently, foreclosure prevention.

i’m dreaming...of acorns roasting on an open fire...
ACORN is an “anti-poverty” group? I thought they were a “pro-collectivism” group. Not same-same.
thought you might be inspired by #3...gratis.
There should be FBI agents carting boxes and computers out of every Acorn office in the country.
Let’s start a pool on when the first office is raided.
I’ve got the “never” slot.
Does this then mean that there is a liberal media?

GOP Seizes on ACORN Funding

Where was the media? Slower than the GOP...
A month old ... MSM apparently deemed this as non-news-worthy. MSM, ACORN and affiliates are tanking and I for one cannot wait for their demise!
They had to see 2 million of us standing in Washington on 9-12 to grow those stones!
the goal is to get a funding cutoff bill to Barry’s desk and watch him decide whether or not to veto...will be loads of fun!
A lot of federal dollars go to local housing authorities that work hand in hand with ACORN. A lot of funds get into their grubby hands this way.
Oh that has happened in some voter fraud cases... but the files and computers happened to get stolen before the authorities arrived.
coincidence I am sure
When I read the headline I thought that the ACORN issue had caused the GOP to seize up (as in freeze, or lock up).
Define “new” money being given to ACORN.
ALL FUNDING that is in any pipeline anywhere should be cut off.
Complete audits need to be done.
ACORN is Head Start on steroids.
Well, first of all, it’s not an anti-poverty group. Unless you think that Hitler and Stalin did a lot to aid the poor.
Does this then mean that there is a liberal media?Seizing on an issue that has been trumpeted by conservative media...
Wherever did you get a silly notion such as that? There are right wingers galore, but there is no such thing as "left wing."
