SAN DIEGO – At least one Border Patrol agent shot the driver of a pickup as it tried to run over agents who were detaining two suspected illegal immigrants near the U.S.-Mexico border Wednesday evening, authorities said.

The man driving the truck was later detained in the Nestor neighborhood and taken to a hospital for treatment, said supervisory Agent Daryl Reed, a Border Patrol spokesman. He did not know where or how many times the man was shot.

About 6:30 p.m., agents were stopping two people at the entrance to Smuggler's Gulch near Monument Road in the Tijuana River Valley. At some point, a Ford F-150 drove toward the agents on Monument Road in an apparent attempt to run them over, Reed said.

At least one agent opened fire, and the truck drove north on Hollister Street, the spokesman said.

The man made a left turn on Tocayo Avenue and then a right turn on Gayo Court, which is a cul-de-sac with homes, Reed said. He left the truck and ran through several yards.

Agents went to Leon Avenue, where they detained the suspect, Reed said. No Border Patrol agents were hurt. A resident where the suspect was arrested was reading in her garage when she heard a loud, thumping noise. She said she instinctively got up and locked the side door to the garage moments before someone tried to force the door open.

The resident then ran to lock the rest of the doors in the home when she saw Border Patrol agents jump into her yard, asking if she saw anybody running. She pointed them to the front yard, where agents took a man into custody. He was later taken away in a gurney, said the resident, who asked not to be identified because she feared for her safety.

Moments later, the neighborhood was swarming with more Border Patrol agents, San Diego police officers and helicopters, she said.

San Diego homicide detectives are investigating the shooting, along with the FBI, which normally investigates shootings involving Border Patrol agents, Reed said.

Wednesday's shooting was the latest in what some are calling an increase in violence along the border. One of the most violent examples was the shooting death of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Robert Rosas. The 30-year-old was shot eight times July 23 about 30 yards from the border in Campo while investigating a report of suspicious activity. The assailants squeezed back into Mexico through an opening beneath the fence, vanishing in the dark.

Rosas' death prompted stepped-up patrols in both countries. On Aug. 17, the Border

I hope we don’t see another Ramos Compean fiasco where two agents get indicted.

Thankfully, Jorge Bush isn’t around to put his stamp of approval on another federal prosecution of our brave border guards doing their duty.
