South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson's son defended him Wednesday against a charge by former President Jimmy Carter that the congressman's "You lie" outburst during a speech by President Obama was racist.
"There is not a racist bone in my dad's body," said Alan Wilson, who is running for state attorney general in South Carolina. "He doesn't even laugh at distasteful jokes."
The day before, Carter called Wilson's outburst "dastardly" and "based on racism."
"There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president," the former president, a Democrat, said. He was responding to an audience question at a town hall meeting at his presidential center in Atlanta.
The elder Wilson, a Republican, was formally rebuked Tuesday in a House vote for shouting "You lie!" during Obama's speech to Congress last Wednesday.
The shout came after the president said illegal aliens would be ineligible for federal subsidies to buy health insurance.
"It's unfortunate people make that jump," Wilson's son said of Carter's claim. "People can disagree - and appropriately disagree - on issues of substance, but when they make the jump to race it's absolutely ludicrous. My brothers and I were raised by our parents to respect everyone regardless of background or race."
Carter said Joe Wilson's outburst was a part of a trend against Obama that has included demonstrators equating him to Nazi leaders.
"Those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national program on health care," Carter said. "It's deeper than that."
The rare Congressional rebuke of Wilson was pushed through by Democrats angry that the Republican had violated rules of decorum and civility. Some Republicans, though, characterized the measure as a witch hunt.
Wilson, who apologized to Obama, insisted he owed the House no apology.
South Carolina's former Democratic Party chairman also said he doesn't believe Wilson is a racist.
"I think Joe's conduct was asinine, but I think it would be asinine no matter what the color of the president," said Dick Harpootlian. "I don't think Joe's outburst was caused by President Obama being African-American. I think it was caused by no filter being between his brain and his mouth."

As a Leftist Democrat Carter does what Leftist Democrats do in projecting his/their own character, or lack thereof upon others.
Jimmy Carter swells with pride at this ability, sort of like a kid who just learned to tie his shoe, and keeps reminding us of it ad nauseum.

Obama just happens to surround himself with racist demagogues, nope no parallels no nazis there, nosiree.
Wonder how Carter is enjoying his bus ride. So far no one is agreeing w/him except maxine and bill crosby.
Yes, I suppose Jimmy Carter would know a thing or two about racism. Hypocrite.
The notion that Wilson is racist is such a ridiculous ploy that it is sure to backfire because it is such a transparent attempt at discrediting Wilson & distracting from his legitimate criticism of the President.
Jimmy Carter is another propagandist from the Clown Universe...
Just because his friends and family are and have always been racists, does not mean America is!

AFAIC President Peanut Brain is the racist since he believes we have to shut up and take any ridiculous lie 0bama cares to tell, just because of his melanin content.
"Inherent feeling among many Democrats in this country" that is.
Why even respond to this failure ? He is a laughing stock. Lets not forget , his mentor was Lester Maddox. Or as he was called by some , the axe-handle .
Which is worse, Jimmy, a racist or an anti-semite of the first order?
Why choose? Jimmuh is both a racist and anti-Semite, IMO. His comment advocating ‘ethnically pure’ neighborhoods should be hung around his neck for posterity.
Jimmy, I feel exactly the same towards you that I do towards ObamA. Does that mean I’m a racist towards his white half?
Jimmy Carter should explain why he ran on the same ticket with Lester Maddox.
