[Can’t say I haven’t been called that from time to time, minus “pretentious.” ]... But if you’ve lived in Illinois long enough to pick up the manner of speech, that’s the way it’s often said, with gritted teeth. Maybe all Illini are smartasses too, but gritted teeth aren’t unusual in regional speech. I’ve had a few European tourists take note of that, otherwise I would never have noticed. There are other words less profane that get the same stiff-lips locked-teeth treatment used by Obama. Like “cheese,” “sugar,” “Jesus”, “Chicago,” and with a more open but still set jaw, there are words such as “delicious.” The phrase “Wouldja like schuger inyer tea?” is said with teeth closed or nearly so and virtually no visible facial movement. Just don’t add any words with an F, P or an M.
