State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo yesterday launched an investigation into pork-barrel grants given to ACORN by state lawmakers, as City Council Speaker Christine Quinn froze all city funding earmarked for the scandal-scared community-activism organization.

Not at all. The Obama Justice Department has already fully investigated the matter and has determined that ACORN did nothing wrong. However, the journalists that recorded ACORN may need to be prosecuted.

Correct me if this is wrong but doesn’t the FBI operate in pursuit of DOJ investigations, not just decide on its own to investigate something?
I am sure you are right.
Frankly, now that you brought the subject up, I realize I really don’t know how the FBI works.
If it is under the DOJ, then we are screwed.

I think there are certain situations they can by law assist with such as local kidnappings but that might involve interstate jurisdictions, some types of killings or other crimes, task forces with all levels of LE cooperating on an investigation of organized crime, etc.
What I doubt they can do on autopilot, however, is begin an investigation of ACORN.
I do think that would have to be initiated by the DOJ, but again I ask anyone for a correction if this is wrong.
