New York City freezes ACORN funds, Cuomo launches probe

The media may be trying as hard as possible to ignore the series of undercover videos taken at ACORN offices around the nation, but politicians don’t have that luxury. Even in New York, both state and city officials have reacted to voter outrage over the actions of ACORN staffers offering advice on hiding tax evasion and child prostitution, especially since these offices run in part on taxpayer money. The New York Post reports that the city council in NYC have suspended payments to ACORN pending further investigation, and that Attorney General and gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo has launched an investigation (via JWF):

They should get Spitzer involved since he has relevant expertise.

I think this one might play out. Cuomo is very good at figuring out which way the wind blows, and here is his chance to launch a spectacular investigation. I think he wants some scalps to carry into his gubernatorial campaign, and not just flunkie scalps.

Forgot to say: suspending payments to them hits where it hurts.

Cuomo is just smart enough to know that ACORN will eventually want him gone. After all, he’s a rich white guy.

We will see. I suspect in this case his ambition will win out over old loyalties.

What we saw in the videos was mortgage fraud. Clearly, this wasn't a first for the Acorn employees. Had the pimp and his girl walked into every Acorn office, we would be seeing many more videos.

What now needs to happen is that formal complaints must be filed with each State Office of Financial Regulation against Acorn and their offices audited "for cause".

The Federal Trade Commission has jurisdiction over the Federal requirements for mortgage companies so, complaints should also be filed with the FTC.

I guarantee you the State and Federally required paperwork that must be maintained for each loan will be in shambles if it even exists.

ACORN scalps might help if he were running for governor of, what, Oklahoma?

ACORN has already begun dismantling itself. They are moving over to COI. The only thing left to prosecute will BE the mid-level flunkies cuz the big boys are gone already to much bigger, more fertile ground.

Ambition always gives way to issues of life...and death. Cuomo can go only so far and he knows it. It’s a show.

Remember the good old days when the News organizations used to do investigative reporting and uncover slime like this??

I have sent off numerous ACORN (and Co-PIRG) door-to-door political activists with a tick in their ear for daring to come to my house and attempt to spout their BS. They are always surprised that someone knows what they are up to. Last fall I had two come by who were campaigning for BO. My neighbor and I ganged up on them and ran them off by telling them we are committed, evangelical capitalists, and I handed them some old Bush campaign materials I had left over from 2000.

This will get the constituents to stop paying attention for a while. Then payments can resume as normal.
