WASHINGTON (AFP) US President Barack Obama rejected comparisons between the deepening US involvement in Afghanistan and the Vietnam war in an interview with the New York Times published Tuesday.
Some commentators have suggested that Obama could suffer the same fate as 1960s Democratic president Lyndon Johnson who saw his reformist administration eventually consumed by an entanglement in a war half a world away.
But Obama, who is aiming to enact a hugely ambitious domestic agenda while dealing with multiple crises abroad, rejected the comparison.
"You have to learn lessons from history. On the other hand, each historical moment is different," Obama said in a joint interview with the New York Times and CNBC.
"You never step into the same river twice. And so Afghanistan is not Vietnam."

Correct. It’s a freakin’ desert, not a steamin’ jungle.
So I guess he missed the history lesson on Socialism???? This guy makes no freaking sense...
It can quickly turn into another vietnam if you don’t get your sh*t together and let the generals run the war.
he is “stepping in” it alright...and its not the same river!
it WILL be another Vietnam if he doesn’t give the military enough troops, and lets them have ROE that the military decides on!
If not, this will be Vietnam on fast forward.
What an unqualified Buffoon this guy is..lets pray he just listens to the military leaders and keeps his f...g nose out of it!
Surprised that he didn’t say something like.....”This ain’t no party....This ain’t no disco...This ain’t no foolin’ around......”
WHAAAAAT?
Did you say John Kerry was in Vietnam????
Wow, what you learn on Freep....ha.
We got out of VN wounded but alive.
I fear for our military being so close to nuke armed Pockystain.
It would provide perfect crisis/need/cover for forming his civie purple shirt army!
Be assured, Barry has no concept of military history.
As such, he definately needs to put down the liberal revisionist handbook because last I remember, the moronic libtard idiots were touting that Iraq was Bush’s “Vietnam.”
If Obama goes down it will be because of his own doing.
His failure will not be the same as LBJ’s. LBJ also has health problems, his heart.
To compare the two, for me, is comparing apples and oranges. Not the same so the conclusion is wrong. IMHO.
The MSM will not allow Afghanistan to become another Vietnam. They will wait until a Republican is in office.
...typical Odumbo line of bullsh*t that makes absolutely no sense.
What?! LBJ sent a half a million. And you recommending that Obama send even more!?
Some problems can't be solved by throwing more blood and money at them. This is one of them.
The argument that "if only we spend more" is not confined to pro-war conservatives. Leftists make the same argument for why the war on poverty failed. They say that it only failed because LBJ "did not spend enough money." All the troops in the world can't conquer that clan invested, drug lord invested society.
Conservatives need to stand up and say no to Obama's ("the buffon's" war. We need to get the hell out not give O even more of our flood and treasure.. We can't afford to keep policing the world or to engage in nation building.
Obama says: “Afghanistan is not Vietnam...but give me time...”
The parallels with Vietnam are indeed close though the differences are also notable. In Vietnam, we only had one enemy to worry about (the Communists). In Afghanistan, we have to worried about countless factions and clans. The situation is arguably much worse in this regard.
Is Afghanistan a war or a police action? Has Obama defined victory in Afghanistan or does that word give him nightmares? He’s thinking about poll numbers, so how will he react to the polls on Afghanistan?
You never step into the same river twice? What’s that supposed to mean?
one other possible similarity if O doesn’t get it together is the unacceptable situation of having our troops fighting halfway around the world when no one is supporting them at home. he needs to get out there and cheerlead.
