President Obama repeatedly says of health care changes that doing nothing would be worse than an overhaul. But exactly why is that? The fact is that health insurance is slowly reforming itself, largely in response to employer and consumer demand.
In a normal market, consumers rule. If prices get too high, consumers stop buying or seek out alternatives. The rapid rise in health care costs, followed by a rise in health insurance premiums, has been driving employers and insurers to find less expensive alternatives. Hence, the growing trend toward what's known as consumer-driven health plans (CDHPs).
CDHPs typically combine a high deductible health insurance policy say, a $3,000 to $5,000 deductible for a family with a tax-free account, usually a health savings account (HSA) or health reimbursement arrangement (HRA).
Money from the HSA or HRA is used to pay for smaller expenditures and routine care, while health insurance covers major expenses, such as a hospital stay.
Money in a health savings account can come from the employer or employee, or both, but it belongs to the employee and travels with him if he changes jobs. Funds not used by year's end roll over and grow with interest. Health reimbursement arrangements share some similarities, but the funds are usually not portable between jobs.

Thanks!
Last year I had a couple of health issues. I made my big deductible early in the year out of my HSA. The insurance kicked in and the insurance covered the rest of the year. The policy isn't that expensive, relatively speaking.
'But it's not freeee' /s
bump
I have one also. Premium is pretty good, relatively speaking. Another bonus is that with a $5k deductible I can get catastrophic coverage policy with my heart issue. With a low deductible no one will insure me.
Key here is of course that a major problem will not bankrupt me, and I have good access to good quality care.
If it’s “free”, I won’t get much access to poor (at best) care. IOW, one gets what one pays for. Unless one is paying the government.
and then try to pocket my HSA !
all $0.01 of it.
It takes a Texan to put the health bill in plain English
- and he actually READS from the bill.
This leaves no doubt what it says. No room for spin.

This is the best existing solution. We can “Bend the Curve” only by involving consumers financially in their health care. A change in the tax code to favor these plans would fix the problem.
Excellent. This is real empowerment, unlike the sort of “empowerment” pushed by the poverty pimps in the Democratic party.
