WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama has extended the U.S. trade embargo on Cuba for one year, the White House said in a statement released on Monday.

The extension was expected and has been the practice of all U.S. presidents dating to the 1970s under a section of the so-called "Trading With the Enemy Act."

Obama extended the embargo even though he has made reaching out to old U.S. foes a key plank in his foreign policy.

‘”Trading With the Enemy Act.” ‘

Of course, we trade with Communist China, but not Cuba.

I have been to China as well as to a certain nation not far from the U.S. and I can tell you that conditions for the people in China are far more oppressive than they are in that other country.

He's doing a nice job of having it both ways. From Wash Post September 3, 2009:

"The Treasury Department formally lifted nearly all U.S. restrictions on family travel to Cuba on Thursday, along with limits on how much money families can send to relatives on the island.

"The department also eased regulations prohibiting U.S. telecommunications and satellite linkages between the United States and Cuba and licensing requirements for visitors engaged in agricultural and medical sales."

China has never taken us to the brink of nuclear war. Cuba has.

Cuba has never killed or slaughtered Americans like China has.

Either coming over the hills in Korea or aiding, abetting and supplying the NV in Vietnam. China has killed more Americans post WII than any other country combined.

Be pissed at Cuba, but their blood is on Chinese hands.

The same could be said of Germans, Russians (Cold War), Vietnamese, hell even the French (Patton’s invasion of North Africa he faced hostile French forces, at least for about 12 hours).

The Cubans were different. Man went out of his way, 90 miles off the coast, to put nukes that we’re meant to be launched, not maintained.

There’s a school of diplomatic thought that calls the secret armistice the Russians and Americans made at the resolution of the crisis the first nuclear disarmament deal.

Until then, all our early warning (DEW) stations were in the Arctic. We had ZERO DEW capability in the southern US. They would not have known about a launch until it was literally overhead at the time.

The Jupiters in Turkey amounted to the same kind of threat to the Russians. The Russians were proving a point, dangerously, but a point nonetheless.

Once the Cubans had the missiles, Castro was pretty hell bent on using them. He was the who violated Russian orders not to shoot down that surveillance plane. From that point on the Russians knew they might not be able to maintain control over those missiles.
