Social workers banned a young woman from her own wedding in an extraordinary row over whether she is bright enough to get married. Kerry Robertson, who has mild learning difficulties, was told her wedding was being halted just 48 hours before she was to walk up the aisle with fiance Mark McDougall
Yesterday, Miss Robertson, who is five months pregnant, said the decision was cruel. She said: 'I am still so upset about everything. I know what marriage is. It is when two folks want to spend the rest of their lives together. I love Mark and I want to get married to him.' Miss Robertson, of Dunfermline, Fife, has been in the care of her grandmother since she was nine months old after her parents were unable to look after her, with her welfare overseen by social workers at Fife council. In January this year, she met Mr McDougall, a 25-year-old artist from Arbroath. When Miss Robertson became

"I know what marriage is. It is when two folks want to spend the rest of their lives together. I love Mark and I want to get married to him.'
When a government has this much control over your life-- that is when it is your duty to burn it to the ground.
This is an outrage, but given how the UK has gone, I am not at all surprised.
I dont understand how they can forbid her like that
1The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. 3They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. 4For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.

I think her being 17 years old might have something to do with it.
surprised they didn’t force her to have an abortion
Bah. Juliet (in Romeo and Juliet) was 13. Human society didn't always treat adults as children for such a long time.
true. But I doubt the autistic are going to lead that particular movement.
But I have been wrong before.
Like not beginning a sentence with But.
From the article:
Under Scottish law, a registrar may refuse to marry a couple if he believes one or both the parties lack the mental capacity to understand what the institution of marriage is about.
The question now becomes, what is marriage. Let us ponder that while we sit comfortably at Irony Theater and wait for the play, No True Scotsman, to begin....
Ouch. That appears to be the case.
In January this year, she met Mr McDougall, a 25-year-old artist from Arbroath. When Miss Robertson became pregnant, they began making wedding plans.
Absolutely the Right Thing to do.
'When we opened it, two social workers burst in and told us that the marriage was illegal because Kerry has learning difficulties and did not possess the capacity to make such a decision.
Therein lies the outrage. "Illegal"??? I suppose she can count herself fortunate that they didn't also insist she have an abortion.
She is property of the State and a subject of the Crown.
You can get married here in 30 minutes.
24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Nah, she’s not Mexican.
Okay, well, that was over 400 years ago.
Wooden ships were high technology, then, too. You would have been lucky to live to 40. The Pope ruled Europe, and the Plague swept London. I really don’t see what that has to do with this situation.
Note that I’m not saying they’re right, or that they should have that amount of authority over her. I’m merely observing that things might be different if she were a bit older.
Although I’m not sure about that.
And yes, Britain has become a pitiful nanny state.
[whether she is bright enough to get married]
That’s pretty rich coming from a country who has a long history of incestuous marriages to keep their royal blood ‘pure’.
THAT produced enough blithering idiots that would make this young girl look like a rocket scientist.
Marriageable age is 18 in England and Wales, or 16 with parental permission.
But in Scotland, it's 16.
Fife is in Scotland.
So the local government social workers here are telling a marriageable age adult (in the context of marriage, at least) that she's forbidden to marry.
A pregnant one at that.
I have more comments about this, but I’m going to refrain from posting them.
Teddy K. was married twice and he was a near-retard?
